ANGEL Solemn dedica tion of the magnificent hew Mt. Angel Abbey Church here Friday climaxed a 70-year goal of the Benedictine Oregon in Oregon. A near-capacity throng of clergy and laity was present as the Most Rev. Archbishop Edward D. How ard, DD, Portland dedicated the structure to St. Benedict and St. Michael, whose plaques adorn the front of the buff bricl and terra cotta ediface. It is located on the hilltop above Mt. AngeL Excluding the choir, or sanctu ary, used exclusively for monks of the Abbey, the nave and galleries will accommodate nearly 500 peo ple. The new church brings to reali ty a dream -long in the minds of the monks and the people or Mt. Anuel. to for now the laity may again attend the solemn service of the monks denied them for many years due to lack of space. Assisting the archbishop were the Very Rev. Patrick Meagher, as deacon; the Rev. Sebastian ier haar, as subdeacon; and the Rev. Lawrence Turgeon as metropou tan cross bearer. Forming an honor guard were 18 fourth degree Knights of Columbus in full re galia. The archbishop blessed the out side wafts of the church while monks and seminarians chanted the psalms; then his group entered the church where he blessed the interior. The Rt. Rev. Abbot Thomas Meier of Mt Angel Abbey, his assisting priests and servers then entered the sanctuary and cele brated the pontifical mass while monks in choir, led by the Rev. Albert Bauman, sang the beauti ful Gregorian chant. Officers of the mass included the Very Rev. Martin Pollard, as assistant priest, the Rev. Luke Eberle and the Rev. Stephen Hof mann as assistant deacons; the Rev. Dominic Broxmeyer as dea con of the mass; the Rev. Placidus Sander, the Rev. Thomas Brock haus, Frater Benedict Suing and Frater Leo Rimmele. Among church notables here for the occasion were Abbot Colum ban Thuis, Covington, La.; Bishop E. Kelly, Boise, Ida; the Rev. Fr. Luke and the Rev. Fr. Joseph, both of St. Martin's Abbey, Olympia, Wash. Also present were about 100 clery from the Northwest as well as Benedictine priests from around the state, a large delgation of nuns from the convent at Mt. Angel and representative of various religious orders in Oregon. Lutheran Church Sets Film.Sunday A film night and fellowship hour are scheduled by the congregation of St. Mark Lutheran Church at 7:$0 Sunday evening, according to the pastor, the Rev. John L. Cauble. "Messenger of Peace" is a full length religious picture with a Hollywood cast, produced by the Lutheran Laymen's League. The affair is sponsored by St. Mark's Booster Club. Zululand Film Due in Church At Silverton Statesman News Service SILVERTON A new sound color film, "Zulu Harvest" will be shown at Trinity Lutheran Church Sunday night under the sponsor ship of the Luther League. The film was made in Africa under the direction of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Evangelical Luth eran Church and presents episodes of the 100-year history of Lutheran Missions in Zululand, South Af rica. Background music is by the Con cordio College Choir which ap peared in Salem a year ago. The showing is public. An offering will be divided equally between the mission board and the Luther League. The regular meeting of the league will be Sunday nfght at 6:30, an hour earlier than usual, with the film to be shown at 7:30. Lenten services will be at 8 pjn. Thursday, Trinity ' Brotherhood will meet Tuesday night at 8 o'clock with Henry Raaen, Salem, as speaker. A sound filmstrip, "Had I Known," will illustrate his talk. Flood Area, Give Up 2 Meals Lepers at Teleo, Africa, went without breakfast and dinner for a day to send $15 to the fund for rebuilding Methodist churches in the Kansas flood area, according to Dr. B. P. Murphy of Louisville, Ky., executive secretary, division of home missions and church ex tension, Methodist Church, in a report on the church-wide re sponse to the flood relief appeal. The appeal has yielded $198, 188.16 to supplement $80,000 raised within the stricken section by the Kansas-Nebraska area fund. It will help replace certain personal losses of pastors and replace prop erty. The summer floods caused property damage in excess of $300,000 and "untold personal loss to our pastors and church mem bers." The board furnished emer gency pastoral support of $11,875. Bishop Dana Dawson, of the Kansas area, says that discourage ment was deeD after an inspection of the 58 damaged church proper ties and the estimate of hundreds of thousands of dollars needed to restore them, but that the church's response gave new heart to the victims and they are rebuilding. Harold W. Black. The Cecil B. DeMille picture will be at the Elisnore Theater on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Holy Week, April 8-10, for free showing at 9:30 a. m. Sponsorship is by Salem Council of Churches. Funds Sought For Expansion By Lutherans A special committee of St. John's Lutheran Church has been named and organized the local phase of a nation-wide "Conquest for Christ" Lutheran expansion program, according to the Rev. H. W. Gross, pastor. Members of the committee are William Lewis, chairman, Carl Anderson, Roger Malbon, Carl Melzer and Arthur Ring. The 5,000 congregations of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, an international church body, have voted to raise $10,000,000 to pro mote thgir world-wide mission program and to expand facilities for training teachers and minis ters. The endeavor will be achieved through the voluntary gifts of the I, 810,000 members with individ ual contacts March 23. After a no host dinner served by the women of St. John's Lutheran Guild at the parish hall, 30 men will go out to canvass local members. MT. ANGEL Trinity Luth eran Church, three miles east of Mt. Angel, Sunday will join its 5,000 sister congregations in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in gathering a ten-million dollar offering called the "Conquest for Christ," according to John H. Werth, pastor. This offering is being gathered to expand the church's colleges and seminaries for the training of more pastors, teachers, and mis sionaries, and to furnish the mul tiplying home and foreign mis sions with the necessary chapels, parsonages, and other urgently needed mission equipment and supplies. The committee chosen to par ticipate in the church-wide can vass at Trinity congregation are: Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Spath, a missionary of the United Lutheran Church in America to Argentina, will pre sent a program at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Spath is a graduate of Western Lutheran Theological Seminary (now Central) and has been en gaged in mission work in Argen tina since 1944. He was a semin ary classmate of the Rev. Harold Hamilton, pastor of Good Shep herd Church. Now on furlough he will return soon to his parish work in Argen tina. C, will conduct a mission in Salem this summer for the Greater Salem Gospel Crusade, the board announced Friday. Dr. John R. Turnbull was named director of the campaign. Johnson is the founder of New Life Camp in that state, sponsored by "Your Daily Devotional Pro gram" network. He is said to be one of America's outstanding evangelists. Included in his party will be Les Barnett, known as "the poet of the organ," in radio and films. Since his conversion a few years ago, he has devoted himself to a ministry of music in the evangel istic field. The third member ef the party is the baritone soloist and song leader, Clyde Taylor. The crusade board consists of representatives from the local Na tional Association of Evangelicals, Christian Business Men's Com mittee, Christian Business and Professional Women. Sunday Rites Miss Edna Holder, returned from work as a missionary in India, will speak at the Sunday morning ser vice at Leslie Methodist Church. Wesley Turner, pastor, will be in Klamath Falls as guest leader in the evangelistic mission for the coming week. China Mission Story Slated, First Baptist The Rev. James Garrison, mis sionary to China under the Con servative Baptist Foreign Mission Society, will speak at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon in First Bap tist Church. Garrison served for five years as a missionary to the Nosu tribe on the borderlands of Tibet. When ordered to China, the party of 12 missionaries and children traveled 250 miles over the rugged mount ains of West China by foot and carrier. Missionary Garrison will tell of his experiences with the people not before reached by the Christians, and of their treatment under the Communists before leaving their mission station. JOHN HENRY SOLTMAN 1st Methodist Building Fund Crusade Ready A crusade for $130,000 to com plete funds for remodeling the 80-year-old building of First Methodist Church will begin Sun day. Dr. John Henry Soltman, di rector, will speak at the 11 a.m. service tomorrow, Loyalty Sun day. Dr. Soltman is one of six min isters employed in such work by the Methodist Board of Church Extension. Funds will be raised by volun tary giving, with no solicitation either at public services or by some 100 members who will be visiting other church families dur ing the coming two weeks. Pledge cards will be brought to the serv ice on Palm Sunday. The money from this drive will join some $90,000 already received in bequests from the late Mrs. B. E. Carrier and J. H. Baker.
