NATIONAL AUXILIARY PRESIDENT DUE IN
SALEM FOR LUNCHEON MEETING MARCH 27
Plans for the coming visit of
the national president, Mrs. E. A.
Campbell, were completed at the
meeting of Unit 136, American
Legion Auxiliary Wednesday night
at the Salem Woman's Clubhouse.
The unit members will arrange
the tables and the invitations for
the luncheon to be given in honor
of Mrs. Campbell on March 27 at
the American Legion Club. Mem
bers of Capital and Kingwood
Units are also assisting with plans
for the president's visit.
The Unit will entertain with a
birthday party in honor of the
post on Tuesday night, March 11,
at the Izaak Walton Clubhouse
with Mrs. El wood Townsend in
charge. There will be dancing and
refreshments.
The Americanism committee re
ported on the cleaning of flags for
seven schools and that a hospital
bed is now available in Salem.
Mrs. Robert Green has been
named a member of the Girls
State committee and Mrs. Charles
Cox on the blood donor commit
tee. The unit plans a card party
for April 9 and a hat making party
on April 7 at the Veterans Hos
pital in Portland.
The child welfare committee
announced that glasses have been
purchased for a child and shoes
for two "children. The list of war
and post war orphans Is being
completed in the schools through
the assistance of Frank Bennett,
city school superintendent.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Roberts (Alice Jo Schmidt) Who
were married cn Feb. 23 at St. Philcmena's Catholic
Church in Denver. The bride is the daughter of the 1. P.
Schmidts of Salem and the groom is the son of Mrs. Lorena
Roberts cf Denver. The newlyweds will reside in Denver.

Toll Soars
BONN, Germany (JP'y- West Ger
many's highway traffic toll hit a
record high during the third quar
ter of 1951 with 2,313 persons kill
ed and 67,045 injured, the federal
statistical office announced re
cently. There were 93,197 acci
dents, representing a jump of 25
per cent over the same 1950
period.
West Germany has a popula
tion cf about 48 million. It also
ha& a record number of cars on
the road. Motor vehicle registra
tions at the end of 1951 exceeded
2.6 million.
Under prodding of the Allied
authorities, German police are
campaigning to reduce the toll.
Lady Sailor
Tows Ships
LONG BEACH, Calif. UV-Lu-cille
(Ginger) Huckels of nearby
Lakewood is in the battleship-
towirrj, business.
Ginger has been piloting a 36
foot landing craft for the naval
shipyard here since 1944. Her job
is to- help dock and take in tow
the large navy vessels at the yard.
Gmger's two reasons for doing
this work are ner daugnters Jo
anne, 13, and Candace, 6. Before
assignment to the power launch.
Ginger had never piloted anything
larger than a rowboat.
Once, when the shipyard was
closed, the woman skipper ran a
laundry boat to the battleships to
pick up sailors' uniforms. It didn't
work out so well, she explained,
bet j use she always had to have a
man along to go aboard the Navy
vessels.
Cheese Quality
Cut by Penicillin
MELBOURNE, Australia (JP
The mysterious decline in quality
of cheese from some Victorian fac
tories has been traced to penicillin.
Victorian Department of Agri
culture cheese expert W. J. Park
said minute quantities of penicil
lin in milk from cows being treat
ed with the drug had caused some
costly failures in the cheese vats
of several factories.
In other cases, he told newsmen,
the drug had delayed the process
by stopping the growth of cheese
Btarter bacteria, resulting in a
poor quality product.
Aussie Movie
Studio Folds

SYDNEY, Australia fP) - Aus
tralia's only major film produc
tion center, Pagewood Studios, is
to close down. Trade circles say
the closing will be a severe set
back for the Australian film in
dustry. Ealing's of London, which oper
ates the studios, has decided to
close them because it has been
refused permission by Capital Is
sues Control to raise $420,000 to
finance the making of a full
length film "Robbery Under
Arms."
Ken G. Hall, of Cinesound, Ltd.,
said that the permission to raise
the capital had been refused be
cause film production was not an
essential industry in Australia.
The picture was to have had a
world-wide release under the J.
Arthur Rank banner.
Concert Series
Shows Profit
The William Warfield concert on
Wednesday night brought the Wil
lamette University Associated Stu
dents series expenses for the year
out of the red and into a $264
profit.
According to the management,
the expenditure for the four art
ists was $6,500, and the total cost
(including the artists' fees) was
$8,026. The final artist in the se
ries sang to a house practically
full.
Announcements of the decision
as to whether or not there will be
a series next year are due soon,
according to Phil Ringle, man
ager. The committee is now going
over coupons which Wednesday
night's program contained, and
which were filled in by concert
goers. They are expected to want
this series to continue another
year.
Silverton The Dorcas Society
of Trinity Lutheran Church is
sponsoring a project of collecting
used Christian Christmas greet
ing cards which will be sent to
missionaries in Japan who have
requested them. The society will
meet Friday night, . March 7, at
the church social rooms at 8 p.m.,
with Mrs. Marlin Voiding and Miss
Iona Dallam as hostesses. In con
nection with the Bible study at
this time, a filmstrip will be shown
depicting the early life of the
Apostle Paul.
Willamina Mr. and Mrs. John
Gardner have made known the
i marriage of their son, Clifford, to
Miss Joyce Fink, daughter of Mr.
; and Mrs. Stanley O. Fink of Carl
! ton. The couple were married Feb.
23 in Kalama, Wash., and will
make their home in Willamina.
Silverton Mrs. Edwin Hatte
berg was honored Wednesday
night on the occasion of her birth
day when a group of friends called.
A late supper was served by the
group. Present were Mr. and Mrs.
Hatteberg, Mrs. John Isaacson,
Mr. and Mrs. Harold A. Larsen,
Miss Alice Jensen, Alfred Jensen,
Miss Althea Meyer, William Hat
teberg and Miss Nettie Hatteberg,
the latter two from Salem.

Saturday morning over KSLM at
10:30 a an. Taking part will be Ray
Cook, Dick Richardson, Terry

Timber Grading
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaya UF)
A dozen students from five Asian
countries have begun a course in
timber ending here under the
auspices of the United Nations
Food and Agricultural Organiza
tion.
First of its kind to be under
taken in the Far East, the course
a being attended by students from
Thailand. Indonesia, Burma, Cam
bodia and Ceylon, and is part of
the FACrs expanded Technical
Assistance Program. Malaya pro
vides the Instructors.

ity rate is decreasing sharply.
From 11 JS2 per cent in 1941, the
Index dropped to 8.41 per cent in
1050. It continued its downward
trend in 1851, the National Sta
tistics office announced.
The reduction- was credited
largely to increased activity by
the National Organization for Ma
ternity and Infancy which assisted
almost two million mothers in
M50 through 3,352,280 doctors'

Takes Bride
Mr. and Mrs. Carson Sanders of
Glasgow, Montana, announce the
marriage of their daughter, Mary
Newell Sanders of Seattle, to
Gerald D. Gorton, son of Mr. and
Mrs. James Gorton of Salem, on
March 1, at Kelso, Washington.
Mr. Gorton is presently working
for Boeing Aircraft Company in
Seattle.
