Betty Cooley Engaged

Talcing the romantic spotlight this morning is
attractive, brunette Betty Cooley, whose engage
ment to William E. Kaer Jr. of Olympia, Wash., is
being revealed. The bride-to-be is the only daugh
ter of Mrs. Robert Prentiss of Salem and the
groom-elect is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William E.
Kaer of Olympia. No date has been set for the
wedding.
The betrothal news was first told Saturday
night at the Pi Beta Phi sorority house on the Ore
gon State College campus. Miss Anne Forristel,
longtime friend and sorority sister of Miss Cooley,
assisted with the party. Bottles of punch were
served the coeds and on the label was written,
"Coke Cooley Incorporated with William E. Kaer
Co."
Miss Cooley is a sophomore at Oregon State
College and a graduate of Salem Schools. Her fi
ance attended the University of Oregon and is now
studying at Vanport College in Portland.
Making an extended visit in the capital with her
mother. Mrs. Stanley McKay, is Mrs. Edward J.
Leahy and year old daughter, Connie Ann, who arriv
ed from New York just before New Year's. Lt. Leahy is
currently stationed at Fort McClellan, Alabama with
the navy. Mrs. Leahy, who will be remembered as
Stella McKay, hopes to join her husband later in the

Dances on Agenda .
The Monday Night Dancing Club will entertain
with a formal dinner dance tomorrow night at the
American Legion Club at 7 o'clock. Hal DeSart and
his orchestra will play for dancing.
Mr. and Mrs. David H. Cameron are chairmen of
the directorate and assisting are Mr. and Mrs. Walter
A. Nystrom, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lardon, Mr. and Mrs.
Vernon Wiscarson and Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Martin.
Bon Heur Club members will hold a Leap Year
dance Friday night at the VFW hall between 9 and
12 o'clock. The Five Sharps will play for dancing.
The committee includes Mr. and Mrs. Neil Whit
ting, chairmen. Dr. and Mrs". Waldo 8eUer, Mr. and
Mrs. David Behm, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Burroughs, Mr.
and Mrs. P. W. Cooker, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Crose and
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Dyer.
Mrs. Burns to Speak . .
Slated for Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock is the
regular meeting of the Salem Unit, National Federa
tion of Women's Republican Clubs at the Woman's
Clubhouse. Mrs. Clagk McCall, the new president,
will preside.
Mrs. William Burns, past state president of the
Federation of Women's Republican Clubs and chief
clerk of the Oregon State Senate, will be the guest
speaker. She will talk on "Dangers of Treaty Mak
ing." Mrs. Frank Burlingham will be the soloist and
Mrs. B. W. Stacey will talk on the duties of precinct
committee women.
Bidden as special guests are the precinct commit
tee women of Marion County. A tea hour will follow.

Being welcomed back to Salem are
Mrs. Jack Miller and year old son,
Mark Ernest, who have been away ior 18
months while Mr. Miller was serving with
the Marines. They arrived in the capital
shortly after Christmas and temporarily
are at the home of Mr. Miller's father, Er
nest A. Miller. They have been living at
San Clemente.Calif., and Mr. Miller plans
to continue his studies at the Willamette

Now at home again at their suburban place on Hansen Avenue atop Salem
Heights are Mrs. Phil R. Brownell and children, Pamela and Phil Jr. For ovfet a
year the Brownells have been at Fort Wordsn, Wash., and now Lieutenant Colonel
Brownell is in Japan at Camp McGill, which is located near Tokyo with the 2naj En

Mrs. Richard Wcod and children, Susan and Dick, have returned to Salem to
make their home while Captain Wood is in Japan. The Woods lived tri the
capital until a few years ago, then leaving for Klamath Falls to make their home.
They also have been at Fort Worden, Wash., and Captain Vood is now at CamrJ Mo

H ome again atter a year and a - half absence are Mrs. Leonard Hicks and chil
dren, Ann, Jim and David, who arrived in the capital just before Christmas.
. .e Lieutenant Colonel Hicks was serving in Korea with the Marines his family
mcc'e their temporary home at Laguna Beach, Calif. Colonel Hicks has been releas
ed from active duty and the family is now residing at their Norway street rericence.
