Uurley Impresses at Shrewd Manager for 'Kid
While In Seattle recently we bad the pleasure of meeting Jack
Hurley, the rT"1- and astate snanager of Harry (Kid) Mat
thews, who Is new the talk of the boxing werld ifer hta def lant
land against the IBC mt New Yet, the etepua-Uke faction that
is being accused of eontroling, er try ins to control, all boxing.
A deliberate and cautious fellow who might be mistaken for a
peace-loving clergyman relaxing in a hotel lobby, Hurley doesn't ap
pear to be party-of-the-first-part in the cold war existing between
himself and Al Weill, IBC promoter.
When reminded that he went to greet lengths with his efforts to
land a championship bout for his Matthews with Joey Maxim, and
then suddenly nixed it flatly when Weill offered the terms, the vet
eran boxing man had an interesting tale to tell.
-Lei aae tell you about my fishier Billy Petrolic, the greatest
f his day." tendered Hurley. "He never held a title. I proved to
i fhat fee was better off without it. A champion's saanager set
4mm fa Us own boss. He has to tie op with one pes sailer mmd
TSsifj else Is doss. Well. Petrolic today is wealthy. Is a direc
tor te a bang, and has all his marbles. .
"Maybe Billy would like to see his name in the record book as a
fellow who had been champion of the world. But his bank books don't
make bad reading, either." ,
Consequently we were left with the impression that Hurley doesm
care whether Matthews becomes champion or not so long as he con
tinues to be the most talked -of fighter in the game. It's a shrewd and
cagey way of playing fistic cards, but a profitable one indeed. Hurley
is trying to get as much money as be can for Matthews, without per
mitting the IBC monopoly to ensnare Matthews with its long-reaching
tentacles.
Uis Term Will Govern Any Title Battle
This doesn't necessarily neaa that Hnrler Intends sMestes
pinc all chances for a chaasptonaaun kwl He say accept one even
this year. Bat we'll bet that if he does, It win be under the snper-
rislM of his own terms. And if lie doesnt. atannews wui nui om
the darling of the boxing nation, worth bis weigfct tn geld at any
box office, simply because he's the boy whs Is betas denied by
the disliked IBC.
What Hoes Matthew- himself think of all this? Naturally any
fighter dreams of becoming a champion. We had a talk with The Kid
in the same Seattle hotel lobby and he looked to be anything but
broken hearted over the fact that his manager tabooed the bout with
Maxim. Matthews has great faith in Boss Hurley, and with a friendly
smile let us know, "Jack knows what he is doing."
Matchmaker Tex Salkeld was in Seattle buzzing with Hurley at
the same time, trying to land a Matthews-Danny Nardico bout for
Portland. We've since seen where Hurley doesn't think much of Such a
scrap.
On would think that the prtaeflcfctin pride mt Seattle

The wrestling version of the Martins and Coys so far as the

tag team mat battles Matchmaker I
Elton Owen ever concocted.
i
This is the one Owen has been
trying to land for over a year,
and for obvious reasons. The
Parks Brothers have taken a great
delight in making mat life rather
miserable for Soldat in recent
months, and numerous have been
the occasions for heated flareups
between the Big Russian and the
elder Parks. Perpetual Motion
Herb. It got so bad three weeks
ago that Soldat refused to show
on any card on which the Parks
family was represented, and sent
for Brother Ivan In New York.
Owen had been trying to lure
Ivan from the East for some time.
The two Gorkys appeared here in
tag team matches a year ago, and
were about as rugged as they
came. Since then, however, the
Parkses have taken over as the
most formidable duet in this area.
"Bar none." attests the produc
tive Owen, "this oughta be the
best tag team match ever seen in
Salem. It certainly has all the
earmarks."
This will be the first time the
brother teams ever have met one
another. And since so much of the
Gorky vs. Parks storm has thun
dered here in the past, Owen
wanted to sdve Salem fans the first
meeting between the brothers.
A strong preliminary card has
been set by Owen also. In the
8:30 p.m. opener Newcomer Marcel
Ouimet, a Frenchman, will clash
with Gene Blakely, Texas tough
guy. The 2-of-3 fall soecial has
Buck Weaver on with Prince
O'Mar.
Owen urges fans to get their
seat reservations made at the
armory early, as the Tuesday
card looms as a sure sellout.

Stock Market
Hustles Ahead
NEW YORK (JP) - An abrupt
about face in the stock market this
week jerked it out of a reaction
and sent it scurrying ahead to
challenge a 21-year peak.
The railroads and oil stocks led
the turn, and the advance fed upon
pronouncements from Washington
plus internal strength of the mar
ket itself.
Prices fell the first three days
and then staged a three-day ad
vance. Saturday the Associated
Press average of 60 stocks gained
20 cents st $100.40 making the net
gain on the week 60 cents.
The average now stands only
$1.10 away from the 21-year high
reached Oct. 15.
The amount of business on the
stock exchange this week enpand
ed to 8,320,000 shares, the best
since the week ended Oct. 27.
The day's volume came to 740,
000 shares, the best since Oct. 27.
There were 896 individual issues
on the tape with 406 up and 240
down. Twenty-three new highs
and 2 new lows were established.
Grain Prices
Slowly Sink
CHICAGO CP) -A slow down
ward drift, which stirred up very
little trading activity at any time,
dropped grains on the Board of
Trade Saturday.
There was just one burst of buy
ing activity in wheat, right at the
opening. The bread cereal rose
around a cent on purchases from
commission houses with south
western milling connection. It
faded quickly once that demand
was satisfied.
Throughout the day, however,
wheat acted better than nearly
everything else, and the March
contract managed to close with the
smallest-, fractional gain. May rye
also was firm, but trading- there
was very light.
Wheat closed lower to
higher to 1 cent higher, soybeans
W-1 lower and lard 3 cents low
er to 5 cents a hundred pounds
higher.
