Defense Aide

vil defense organization was an
nounced Thursday. Col. P. W. Al
lison will succeed him.
Fenix left the position because
of new duties as president of Sa
lem Chamber of Commerce. He
has had the defense post since the
organization was established a year
ago.
Allison, appointed by Capt. Wal
lace S. Wharton, county defense
director, ha been working in the
selection of sites for shelters and
evacuation camps.

Lag for Year;
Deaths Rise
Marion county births in Novem
ber were more than a year, ago,
but 195 l's total of new babies to
date is lagging behind the' record
set in 1950, the county health
executive board was informed
Thursday. Deaths are more nu
merous this year, however.
During both October and No
vember, new girls exceeded boys,
the reverse of" the usual ratio. In
October it was 126 to 107 and
last month 101 to 100.
These new babies brought the
total for the" first 11 months to
2,406, compared to 2,480 for the
same period of 1950. The all-time
high, set in 1950, was 2,644.
Death of 46 males and 38 fe
males in October and 31 and 25
in November brought the year's
aggregate to 807, well above the
731 for the same period last year.
These included four infant deaths
in October and one last month.
As usual, heart disease led as
a cause of death, in- 22 cases in
November, followed by apoplexy
8 and cancer 6, while syphilis
caused 2 deaths.
Leading communicable diseases
in November were broncho pneu
monia 15 and measles 14.
Dr. W. J. Stone, county health
officer, reported to the commit
tee on two recent conclaves, the
governor's conference on accident
prevention and the state rural
health conference.
He said that a representative of
the Kellogg Foundation, from
which the county health depart
ment has a grant of funds for
public health nurse training, will
be here to confer with health of
ficials on the county program.

Interest on savings accounts' at
Willamette Valley bank will go
up one-hall of one per cent Jan
uary 1, .to 2 and 2 per cent.
President G. Carroll Meeks an
nounced Thursday.
The higher figure is paid on the
bank's "bonus plan" savings ac
counts which require deposits of
at least $5 each calendar month
and no withdrawals except of in
terest. .
Meeks said all accounts which
do not meet 'those requirements
automatically receive the 2 per
cent interest.

other activities in Salem YMCA's
annual holiday program for boys
will open Saturday and continue
for a week. Roth Holtz, boys' work
secretary, announced Thursday.
The fun is open without charge
to all boys from 9 to 18 years of
age. They were asked to bring
towel, gym shoes and shorts if
taking part in the physical de
partment program.
Saturday's slate will include the
regular gym and swim activities,
with a Christmas party at 10:30
to include movies, stories by Carl
Greider of the YM staff, talk by
the Rev. Brooks H. Moore of First
Methodist church, refreshments.

special schedule of gym and pool
times has been set up to care for
the hundreds of youngsters who
invade the building for the open
house.

teacher whose contract expired
while he or she was in military
service, Attornev General George
Neuner ruled Thursday.
A 1943 legislative act was cited
by Neuner, however, providing for
reinstatement of returning war
veterans "in a like or similar po-
j sition as he had when he left for
service."
The opinion was asked by Rex
Putnam, state superintendent of
public instruction.
BEER BARON DIES

son, 75-year-old Silverton resi
dent who died at a hospital there
Tuesday following a stroke. He
had been in good health up to
this week.
The funeral at 10:30 a. m. Sat
urday in W. T. Rigdon chapel will
be followed by burial in Belcrest
Memorial park.
He was a native of West Vir
ginia who lived many years in
Idaho before coming to Oregon in
1937. He was active in the Meth
odist church at Silverton since
moving there six years ago. In
his early days he had been a
Methodist minister.
He leaves a widow, Bessie Anna;
nine sons and daughters, William
Lawrence Pinson, Gold Beach;
James Paul Pinson, Reedsport;
Mrs. Ruth Mundell, Eugene; Mrs.
Elizabeth Wimer, Portland; Mrs.
Alta Boyd, Kellogg, Idaho; Mrs.
