Special Programs to Occupy
- Programs for Coining Week
Korea will be the setting for a program of songs and drama, "The
Soldier's Gift," to be presented at Evangelistic Temple, Assembly of
God, on Sunday night, December 23. It will include all departments of
the church.
"Carols of Christmas" will be presented at the 7:30 p. m. service
Sunday at First Baptist church, opening with congregational carol
singing, according to the Rev. Thornton Jansma, director of music.
. Special numbers will include vocal solos by Mrs. Gerald Bull,
Kenneth Lottis and Mrs. Daryl Willecke; trios composed of Mrs. John
Geffrier, Mrs. Kessley Talley and Mrs. Myron Eaton and Jansma,
Dale and Gerald Bull; violin solo by Gerard Brown.
Ais Pormes, native of Indonesia, will speak to the college youth
Croup at 6:15.
Calvary Baptist church's senior choir will present Its
annual Christinas cantata Sunday at 7:30 p. m. under direc
tion of E. D. Lindbnrg. The Christmas story from the scrip
tares will be read by Amanda J. Anderson, head of Salem high
school speech department.
At the 11 a. m. worship service Sunday the Rev. Omar N. Barth,
pastor, will give a Christmas message entitled "Naming the Baby."
Wednesday evening a Christmas play, "Back to My Mother's
Bible," will be given by Sterling Missionary circle, including Mrs.
Norman Clark, Mrs. Larry Wagner, Mrs. Gordon Randall, Mrs. Clyde
Gilman, Mrs. Warren Shrake and Miss Clara Isaak. "
The annual Christmas party for all Sunday school departments
will be Friday at 7:30 p.m.
"Christmas, Continued," will be the pageant at First Christian
church, to be presented Wednesday at 7:30 p. m. by the Sunday school
and the adult choir. It will follow the regular church night dinner.
The program will not only portray the nativity scene,
bnt will climax several weeks of preparation by all classes in
the presentation of offerings to mission stations over the
world.
The Christian Youth fellowship had a "double your dollar" pro
ct to raise funds for the Philippines. Other groups and their chosen
fields are: Nursery, India; kindergarten, Japan; primary, Africa; jun
ior, Puerto Rico; junior high. Jamaica; Phi Zeta Christo, Argentina;
Builders, Korea; Keystone, Thailand; Willing Workers, Mexico; 7 S
Sisterhood, Paraguay; Everyman's, state missions.
On December 23 will be the showing of the new film, "Holy
Night."
Outline of the life of Christ, with only the Old Testament as
source material, will be given Sunday at 11 a. m. at Christian and
Missionary Alliance church by the Rev. Paul W. Gunther, pastor. This
is the third in a series on "The Christ of Christmas,"
. St Paul's Episcopal church's Christmas program will include a
pageant at 5 p. m., Sunday, December 23, followed by a tree program
in the parish house; Christmas Eve holy eucharist service at 11 p. m.,
December 24; communion at 10 a. m. Christmas day.
The cantata, "Carols of Christmas" by Lorenz, will be
presented Sunday at 7:30 p. m. by the choir of First Evan
gelical United .Brethren church, directed by the Rev. Wilmer
N. Brown, pastor.
The cantata tells the Chrismtas story with familiar carols. Solo
ists will be John Schmidt, Roy Rutschman, Joyce Erler, Viola Ermel,
Genevieve Jaffe, Joe Mondell. Menno Krause and Lowell Wikoff. Pre
ceding the choir program will be an organ concert of Christmas se
lections. A candlelight carol service Wednesday at 7:30 p. m. will feature
a reading, "How They Came to Bethlehem," by Vera Carlson.
"The Great Light," Christmas cantata by Haldor Lillenas, will be
presented by the youth group of Free Methodist church at 7:30 p. m.
Sunday.
The 32-voice chorus will be directed by Philip G. McHarness
and accompanied by Mrs. Mae Fenwick.
A Christmas concert will be given by the choir of Grace
Lutheran church Sunday at 8 p. m., including carols and an
thems and several Norwegian songs. Shirley Ford conducts
the 24 -voice choir, and Paula Baker is the accompanist.
The Christmas program and open house by the Sunday school of
First Methodist church are slated

For Yuletide
KEIZER, Dec. 14 Christmas
activities are being emphasized at
Keizer Church of the Nazarene,
which will note its first anniver
sary this Sunday, according to the
Rev. J. L. Van Arsdel, pastor.
For several weeks the young
people have sponsored a crafts
class for making Christmas gifts.
Thursday the Women's Missionary
society entertained the congrega
tion at the annual Chiistmas din
ner. Saturday evening, December 15,
a youth group will decorate the
auditorium and trim the tree, fol
lowed by refreshments at the
David Friesen home.
Plans for Sunday, December 23,
include a unified service at 10:30,
with a Sunday school program at
9:45 a.m. and treats to all attend
ing, according to Vernon Obert,
superintendent. In the evening
will be a play, "Chirstmas in the
Cobbler Shop," directed by the
pastor.

SWEET HOME, Dec. 14 A 13-year-old
evangelist and his three
sisters will conduct three services
Sunday in the Groves Hall Reviv
al center.
Known as "miracle singing
children," these children have re
turned from an evangelistic tour
the past summer of 12,000 miles.
Their ages are 9, 10, 11 and 13.
The boy will deliver a sermon at
each service.
A meeting at Eugene December
3 organized the 191st stake district
of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, comprising the
area of the Willamette valley from
Salem to Roseburg. It will be
known as the Willamette stake
with headquarters in Eugene. "
The Sweet Home branch of the
church previously had been a part
of the northwestern states mis
sion. The stake is presided over by a
president and two councilors and
a high council of 12. Ralph B.
Lake, Eugene, was named presi
dent with Harry N. Wright as first
councilor and Hugh F. Webb, Cor
vallis, second councilor.
Ivan M. Burnett was released
as president of the Sweet Home
branch and will assume duties as
one of the high council. Sylvin
Bergevin was sustained as presi
dent of the Sweet Home branch,'
with Walter E. Saily as first coun
cilor and Harry Moffit as second
councilor.

steeple of the new Woodburn
Methodist church building- will
be dedicated at a service at 7:30
p.m. to the memory of Jeanette
Zimmerle, who was a member of
the church for many years.
It is expected that her grand

The Rev. George Popoff, who
escaped from Russian imprison
ment in Berlin, will tell of his
experiences at a city-wide rally
Sunday at 3 p.m. in First Baptist
church, sponsored by Salem Chris
tian Business Men's committee.
The Salem academy octet will
sing.
Born in Bulgaria, Popoff is the
grandson of an Orthodox priest
and the son of an atheist. He was
converted at the age of 14 and
graduated from Bible school in
Stockholm, Sweden.
He has spoken in 26 countries
in eight languages. During World
War II he preached in the bomb
shelters of Berlin, to as many as
80,000 persons at once.
After the occupation by Rus
sia, Popoff held street meetings.
He was told he would have to turn
10 per cent of his congregation to
communism and was harassed by
the Russians for three years, then
imprisoned for 21 days without
food.
