Lester Penney who says weath
er predicting ability has died out
in his family. He says he Just
guesses like everyone else. But on
the basis that the summer was
dry, he guesses the winter will be
hard.

Volunteers in
Weather Work
WASHINGTON, Dec, The
government today, through Secre
tary of Commerce Charles Sawyer
and the Chief of the U. S. Weather
bureau. Dr. F. W. Reichelderfer,
officially took notice today of the
volunteer weather men serving in
M na hv issuing a SDecial vol
ume dedicated to their long and
patriotic service to the nauon.
Fntltled "The Coooerative Wea
ther Observer," the book lists the
names of 45 observers in of Oregon
whn have served voluntarily as
cooperative weather men for more
than 10 years. Of this number, 12
have given the government more
than 20 years' service.
Each volunteer mentioned will
receive a copy of the book.

cord rainfall only: and the full
climatoloeical station at which
they record high and low temper
atures and rainfall.
In paying tribute to the cooper
ative weather observer. Secretary
Sawyer said: "The.volunteer wea
ther man represents the highest
type of American citizen, who un
selfishly devotes his time and ex
poses himself to the severest of
weather in the service of his gov
ernment, and who is content to do
so for the general good he per
forms."
Secretary Sawer. said the value
of the cumulative i record was tre
mendous. "It answers vitally im
portant questions about where to
live, what to grow in our fields;
where to build roads and factories
and airports, how to protect our
farms and towns from floods, and
when to plant and harvest."
