MEDFOKD Retail operation manager for Safeway In Oregon and south west Washington is T. M. "Ted" Medford, former Salem district ' manager. ' He supervises opera tions of the 101 retail stores in 6af eway'i Portland division. While in Salem, Mr. Medford took an active part in civic af fairs, and though now a resident pf Portland, he still retains a keen interest in this community. Commenting on the comple tion of Saf eway'a newest Salem unit, Medford declared, "We are proud, in being able to bring to Salem the finest and most mod ern food store on the Pacific coast the type of store of which, the people of Salem are to Justly deserving. "We hope our many friends will honor us with their pres ence Tuesday evening when we hold sour, pre-opening preview at the new store. Store Rises On Historic School Site - - i.. - f 4 The site of Saf eway's huge new market is a historic one in Salem. It was -on this ground that the Old Washington school served the city as its major educational in stitution for many years. j The ' site is bounded by North 12th, deter, 13th and Marion tree . A, 7 . . fy Vest half of the ground, was j Elsed for school use in 1867 l200, and on it $4700 build 1 was constructed. The east ilf was purchased in 1883 for t 1300. and in that year construe on was started on the Washing ton school. The cost had been est imated at $8000. But then, as now, there were building difficulties, and two years later the structure still was in complete. - So a new contract was drawn, by which R. T. Denhem was to complete the building within five rionths at an additional cost of 13,000. The building finally was Iiadylfor occupancy in 1887 all I rooms and the first class was fraduated Jan. 22. 1888. Several Of the original graduating class till reside in Salem. - Washington school went only to the 8th grade until 1915. In that year, since a high school had been Completed and was In operation . by then, Washington became a lunior high and continued such until 3924 when it again became an elementary school. It continued in operation, although parts of it were junused because of condem cation, until 1949. The records of Connell Ward, business manager of the Salem school district, indicate that around 4000 pupils were graduated from Washington school in its 62 Es j of operation. Now it j has n way to more modern rtxuc si elsewhere and its site be comes the location for a great modern store. C M. HELTZEL C. M. "Chef Heltzel is Salem district manager for Safeway. He was promoted to this post recently from his former as signment as district manager for the South Portland! area. But what goes on behind the scenes to open a store such as this, is a story in itself. To begin with, a site must be chosen. It must meet many re quirements, providing space for the store building itself, and ample space for customer park ing. It must be strategically lo cated to reach traffic flowing in and out of the trading area. It must provide easy access to and from the parking areas. After a site is acquired, con struction estimates must be re viewed, bids solid ted, contracts let lor the construction to follow. Equipment and fixtures espec ially designed for the building: must be assembled from shipping its throughout torn United ttes.
