Although the NCAA basketball rules and interpretations clinic at
St. Louis involved the ins and outs of the cage sport mostly, quite a
bit of between-shifts discussion on football was woven into the two
, - ., . v , - . v day confab by the various attend-
ing commissioners. All 10 NCAA
conferences were represented, and
all 10 representativs forecast a ra-
ther bleak future for the touch
t down game if; legislation of a se-
rious nature isn't forthcoming soon.
The men feel that de-emphasis of
the sport is necessary to some ex
I tent. But not unlike the fellow as
Z signed to finding the needle in the
haystack, they aren't in agreement
as to' just where to begin. All do
agree that platoon system may be
okeh for the big schools, but that
it is amounting to the road to ruin
for the smaller units. They point
to the great number of schools that
have already dropped football for
.. i. .i ... i " 4 all the nroof thev need.
JOHNNY O Additional evils of the platoon
system were pointed out as being (1) the necessity of hiring addition
al coaching help to handle the various specialized portions of offense
and defense and (2) the necessity of having larger squads or fsnn!)
subsidized players. Time was when a head coach and one or possibly
two assistants managed to do all the work. Nowadays some schools
have a, -loach for just about every position, a couple of scouts, a staff
of managers, a road secretary, a statistician ana a lew oiner various
and sundries. That is. if the school is playing big time football.
All were in accord with the belief that the platoon rule would be
junked during the next session of the NCAA, a step toward the hope
that the college sport will return to normalcy. There was additional
talk concerning the abolishment of spring practice as a means of de-
emphasis. But most agreed that it will be hard to get a majority vote
aimed at curbing the April-May drills. i

Mem to agree that the plan certainly has merit, hot are quick to
laugh it off when the seriousness of such a startling move is resi

One can get the idea of how the Ward plan would-work by
; visualizing" Cal's Pappy Waldorf moving to Idaho next year, Idaho's
Babe Curfman going to California, Washington's Hqwie Odell moving
to WSC, and so on right down' the line. Amazing, and also quite con
fusing. Youd be able to hear the Berkeley howl clear up here should
its owners be forced to trade Waldorf for CurfmanJ But at the same
time it should be reminded that Curfman might do just as good a job
as Waldorf at Cal were he to have all those horses at his disposal . . .

credit for Inventing the .catchy nickname, and If the burly 200
peander lands an All-America berth hell have i the lass to thank
for her assist. The label, Johnny O. gives Olszewski a running start
toward an All-Amerk rating. People the country' ever who cant
spell, prononnce or remember Olszewski writers, coaches and

The nickname was born a year ago when the' gaL a typist in the
UC administration office, penned a note to Will Connolly of the SF
Chronicle suggesting that the i ports writers adopt Johnny O as' the
answer to their search for a misnomer to replace j the difficult and
lengthy Olszewski (pronounced Ol-shev-ski, with accent on middle
syllable). The suggestion caught on immediately ;and it's since been

-And in playing for the outfit that he does, 'tis a dead cinch that
Johnny O will be one portion of just about everyone's All-America

him first to Kansas City where in one time; at bat he got one hit

spreading collegiate basketball fix
scandal today engulfed the uni
versity of Kentucky's fabulous
1948-49 team one of the greatest
in,, the history' of the sport.
Investigators from the New
York district attorney's office
seized the two former All-Amer
ica greats, Alex Groza and Ralph
Beard, in Chicago, and ex-Ken
tucky team captain Dale Barn
stable In Louisville.
After questioning, the investiga
tors said, the three early today
admitted accenting 1500 bribes
each to shave the point spread in a
1949 invitational tournament game
March 14.1949 in Madison Square
Garden, New York..
Loyola of Chicago, underdog
by around 10 points in that game,
shipped Kentucky 67-58 in a stun
ning upset. -
Conviction of accepting a bribe
carries a maximum penalty of a
five year jail sentence in New
York.
24 Players Involved
The fix scandal now has impli
cated at least 34 players from
seven teams. Other schools in
volved are Bradley, Toledo,
CCNY, Manhattan, Long Island
and New York U.
Groza, six foot, 7 inch center,
and Beard, a guard, were arrested
last night at the Chicago stadium
where they watched the Roch
ester (N. Y.) Royals defeat the
College All-Stars. Their old men
tor, Adolph Rupp, Kentucky's
basketball coach, directed the All
Stars. Assistant District Attorney Vin
cent A. G. O'Connor of New York
took them to the criminal courts
building where they confronted
Nick (The Greek) Englisis and
Nat Brown gamblers under in
dictment in New York on charges
of game fixing. O'Connor ques
tioned the former players for sev
en hours and then announced that
both had admitted receiving
bribes in the Kentucky-Loyola
game. He told newsmen:
- "The fixers Insisted the payoff
in the Kentucky-Loyola game was
$2,000 with Groza getting $1,000
and the other two $500 each. The
gamblers said the only other point
shaving was in Kentucky-Tennessee
