v but these were thrown back.
The Pyongyang radio- boasted
that 40,474 casualties had been in
flicted on the allies since the arm
istice talks began at Kaesong July
10. The reds said 488 allied planes
were shot down and 15 tanks de
stroyed.

nounced casualties reached 1,237,
872 an increase of 9,018 in eight
dji. Communist battle casualties
were estimated tt 890,756).

Tiedeman's wife, who was driv
ing, and the truck driver, Clifford
I McCarley, Mehama, told police
rail cars on the tracks at the In
tersection blocked their vision.

council has ordered a pump, cost
ing 12,033. from 4. 11. Slentz in
lem. The bid was on a 200-gal-
lon per minute pump
Th- bid also promised delivery
within 10 days. The pump will be
installed in' the -new 220-gallon
test well to supplement the city's
diminishing water supply. :
The council also bought material

summer session of Oregon College
of Education here, left for San
Francisco to sail on the President
Cleveland for Honolulu.
Both have teaching contracts on
the islands for the coming year.
They are graduates of OCE, and
taught last year at Mill City.
They spent this summer with
her mother, Mrs. P. M. Schweixer,
here. ' His parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Albert Schunk of Heppner, visited
them prior to their departure.

surprise, picnic honoring the birth
day of their pastor, Mervin N.
McGill, on the lawn of the Leo
Weddle name recently. A Bible,
a girt from the congregation, was

Albert Wagners are moving into
the old Humphrey house on Main
street which they recently pur
chased from the Kenneth DeWalls.
The latter are living next door.

Rebekah lodges and their families
enjoyed their annual picnic dinner
at Wilson park east of Sdo Sun
day.
Jefferson Christian Women's
fellowship enjoyed its annual pic
nic and guest day on the lawn of
the Ernest Powell home recently.
Mrs. Virgil Bailes led the program.

to expand the airport at Grand
view, in Jackson county. Mo.
Grand view was the home of Mr.
Truman's mother and he has used
its airport on various trips back

Rep. Gross fB-Iowa) sought to
knock out the Grand-view item.
pointing out there is an air force
field at nearby Sedalia. Mow and
suggested it be used instead.
Gross motion to strike out the
item was defeated, 56 to 15.
The air force announced some
time ago that it planned to move
neaaquarters of the continental
air command from Mitchel Field,
Long Island, to Grandview, with
the project to cost $19,000,000.
After his defeat. Gross moved
b send the whole bill back to the
committee with instructions to re
move the Grandview item. Leaders
decided to take a vote on this
