colonel developed a heart ailment

Show Slated
Here Sept. 6
The Horace Heidt Youth Oppor
tunity show will perform at the
Salem high school auditorium
September 6, following auditions
of local talent on August t and 6.
The two 2-hour variety shows
to be given in September at 6:30
and 9 o'clock will be sponsored
by the Salem Shrine club, for the
benefit of the Shrine hospital In
Portland.
Auditions, held a month pre
ceding the show, will be conduct
ed at station KOCO. Winners will
i perform locally and may appear
on a broadcast show from Seattle.
The Salem shows will not be
broadcast

tainers who are scheduled for a
Salem appearance are two who
came here last year with the Hor
ace Heidt show: Ernie Came rota,
six-year old accordionist-enter-tainer,

chest X-ray, too. , -
Officials of the Willamette val
ley chest X-ray program will set
up a special mo Due unit on ine
Marion . courthouse square , today
from 1 to 9 p.m. The navy exhibit'
will be open during the same hours
today and Monday at the square.
Meanwhile the survey, which
began Weunesday in Polk and
Marion counties, will continue to
day in west Salem. X-ray units
will be open to the?- public at
Schmitt's store, 1115 Edgewater
St., today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
A unit for the public also will
be open from 12 to 3 p.m. today
at Kingwood market 1311 Edge-
water st No units will operate in
Marion county, other than the one
tn downtown Salem.
The valley-wide survey will
.continue next '. week with three
X-ray machines - operating in
Marion county, seven- in Yamhill
and eight in Polk county. Open to
the general public will be a ma

liquor control commission have
been received by the civil service
commission..
The time and place for the hear
ings will probably be announced
following the commission's
monthly meeting July 25, James
Clinton, civil service director said.
The men involved are Bernard
Kuen, Jr Charles J. Fontana, and
Donald A. Schmidt
Suspect Sent
To Hospital
For 30 Days
Cecil A. Marvel, charged with
obtaining money under false pre
tenses, 'was committed Friday at
his own request to 30-daya obser
vation in the Oregon state hospitaL
- Circuit Court Judge R. Duncan
continued the case for sentencing.
-The request for the revocation
of the parole of Melvin Forcier
was continued by Duncan in Aug
ust 6 for ' further Investigation.
Forcier was convicted April 12,
1S49. of non-sucDort and given a
one-year suspended sentence and
five-years probation. . .
Also continued for sentencing
until August 6 was the case of
Clifford Milo Tibbetts. He plead
ed guilty June 16 to a charge of
burglary not in a dwelling Febru
ary 2 at a Salem agate and novel
ty shop.

night to the 8414th volunteer air
reserve training squadron on re
cent training. -
They had attended a two-
weeks air force staff school at

Courthouse Memorial"- the trans
fer of the courthouse cupola to a
new site took another step Friday
when the Eagles committee, spon
sors of, the plan, met to set up
plans. .'
One of the first steps taken by
the committee since official an
nouncement of the project was the
setting up of a. trust fund to handle
donations.
Chairman VJ (Vick) Withrow.
said the trust fund will be used
for perpetual care of the memorial
when it is installed In its perma
nent location, possibly Bush's Pas
ture park. Already, Withrow said,
donations have been received by
his committee. '
Named to head sub-committees
were Herbert ' Barker, charged
with the task of removing and
transporting the courthouse dome;
Mayor Alfred Loucks, handling the
city-county relations; and - Elmer
Church, in charge of the fund rais
ing campaign. Withrow will han
dle the publicity and, public rela
tions. 1
' Withrow said the committee ' is
anxious that any interested , per
sons in the county be permitted to
help in the project For that pur
pose, he said, both contributions
and suggestions may be sent in
care of Salem post office box 467,

which he seeks $5000 compensato
ry, damages and $25,000 , punitive
pr exemplary damages from a Sa
lem policeman. " , '
Leduc, French-Canadian star of
the Ice -Follies, declared in his
complaint that he was "by force
and violence Incarcerated in jail"
where he was kept in "a cell with
drunken diseased and unclean peo
ple." . .
The complaint alleges that Leduc
was restrainted from "his lawful
freedom and liberty," and that he
"suffered severe and unusual men
tal anguish," and 'wa's humiliated,
worried and ashamed and damaged
to the extent of $5,000.,,
