The announcement that a British
holiday camp firm had sponsored
a channel swim for the two Tongay
kids led to widespread protests In

Crowds of newsmen greeted the
Tongay plane today.
- Then the immigration men step
ped in, whisking the Tongay off
to a private office. Reporters were
barred during the next half hour
while officials questioned the par
ents on their plans for the ehil
dren.
After the discussion with Ton
gay, the immigration officials
phoned their head office for in
structions. '-
Tongay: waited. Bubba and
Kathy played. v
Then reporters listening at the
door heard an official tell Tongay:
"We have some bad news for

Tongay began to argue, but was
waved away.
McGinnis Field
Opening Tonite
SILVERTON The big opening
of McGinnis field will get under
way at 8:13 Saturday night when
the Siiverton Bed Sox meet the
Albany Alcos on the newly re
modeled ball park. ,
Opening ceremonies will be
short, including ths flag-raising
by the Boy Scouts, and brief talks
by John Schwabe, Siiverton Juni
or Chamber - of Commerce: and
Howard George, representing the
high school which now owns the
ball park.
The new light, installation of
which has just been completed,
are hailed as one of the best pro
jects of its kind in the valley.
There are 120 lights of 1500 watts
each. E. R. Fletcher, PGE engineer,
who oriitfnally dsigned the local
ball field ligthing system in 1937,
was in charge. Working with him
were S. Parry Rose, resident PGE
manager, and Carl Hande of the
field promotion committee of the
Chamber of commerce.
New uniforms furnished by the
Uonr club will be worn the first
time Saturday night by the Silver
ton players. The new fence is par
tially painted with colorful signs
contributed by numerous Siiverton
business houses.
Two more home games are
scheduled for the coming week.
Sunday afertnonn the Red Sox will
meet at Stayton for a league rune.
Wednesday night a Boy Scout
benefit game will be played on
McGinnis field against Salem

One of the bigger events on the local links agenda takes place
at Salem ' Golf club Sunday as mora than one hundred linksters of
varying talents from the mid-Willamette valley area take part in
the unique Salem Shrine club's one-day Calcutta Sweepstakes tourna
ment, proceeds of which go to the
Portland Shrine children's hospi

The field has been split into four
flights according to handicaps,
with top four men in each flight
to get attractive prizes rounded up
by the Shrine club committee un
der the chairmanship of Earl D.

The championship flight, made
up of di voters with handicaps from
zero up to five, will operate over
the 18 holes on a medal basis. The
three lower flights will play under
the "Roodles" system one point
for a bogey, two for par, three for
birdies and four foe eagles plus
three-fourths of individual handi
cap. . I - !
The first flight is comprised of
handicaps; from 6-12, the second
flight from : 13-20 and the third
will include swingers carrying han
dicaps from 21-27.
The victor In the championship
flight qualifies for a handsome tro
phy. I :; ; : !
Numerous towns from through
out the valley, Including Eugene,
Albany, Porvallis and Lebanon,
will be represented in the tour

' First tee-offs in the tourney are
set for 75 am, Sunday, with the
final participants slated to get off
the initial tees around noon.
The Championship flight con
tenders include such top-notchers
as Jacke! Brande, Lebanon; Jack
Owens, Albany and Win Needham,
Jim Sheldon, Jack Russell, Wally
Hug, Wendell Miller, who'll be
among the Salem threats.1

defeated Mrs. Tom DeArmond 6
and 5 and Mrs. McGrath won from
Mrs. P. C. McLaughlin 3 and 2.
This concludes tourament activ

public needs more education on
fish 'conservation, the Oregon fish
commission said today In a regu
lar meeting. Commissioners agreed
that I newspapers and fishing or
ganizations could do a better Job
of promoting conservation.
John -C. Veatch was re-elected
chairman of the commission, and
Arnle Suomela was named to a
four4year term as state director of
fisheries. That is a title change
front his present position as master
fish warden.

3rd Acquittal Ruled,
Game Violation Trial
ENTERPRISE, Ore June 22-
A third straight acquittal went on
record today in the game law vio
lation charges against persons con
nected with Red's Horse ranch, a
resort on the Minam river.
The latest was a directed verdict
of acquittal for R. A. (Red) Hig
ginsf Portland fireman and co
owner of the ranch. Circuit Judge
William Perry directed the verdict
after ruling the state had failed to
prove where a doe had been kill
ed. Higgins had been accused of
killing the doe.
