Icing Blamed
For Crashes
Of Eight Jets
WASHINGTON, June 12-WV
Icing, not sabotage, caused eight
W4 Thunderjets to crash in In
diana last Friday, the air' force
announced today.
It reported that a preliminary
Investigation showed that engine
inlet screens ice up and became
blocked when the aircraft -enter-
ad "a oeculiar set of localized at
mosiiheric conditions lust after
taking off from Wright-Patter
ton Field. Dayton, Ohio, where
tbey had been refueled. ?
Three pilots died in the crashes
It was the largest mass jet dis
aster in aviation history.
Inquiries by the air force, the
FBI and aircraft manufacturers
uncovered no indications of sabo
tage, the air force said.
The eight planes were in a
flight of 34 Thunderjets proceed
ing from Austin, Texas, to Self
ridge Field, Mich." Just before the
accident, a thunderstorm had
struck the area around Richmond,
Ind.
All 71 planes taking part in the
training exercise are being in
spected to determine whether they
suffered any ill effects from fly
ing through the storm area. Four
taa planes checked so far have
d closed "no signs of visible dam
age and are ready for flight," the
air force said. The investigation
is continuing in an effort to de
termine necessary action to7 pre
vent similar , accidents.

Profit Taking
Cuts Market;
Stocks Down
NEW YORK, June 12 A
moderate amount of selling, based
to a large extent on quick profit
taking, depressed the stock market
today. Just about every major di
vision joined in the fall. Losers
showed up especially in rails, oils,
steels, motors, chemicals and air
lines.
Losses extended from a few cents
on into the $l-$2 range with only
a few leaders going beyond that
limit.
Trading started slowly, gathered
speed, and then eased off to a
steady pace that amounted to
1,200,000 shares for the day. Yes
terday's business came to 1,220,000
shares.
The Associated Press average of
60 stocks lost 60 cents at $92.40
with the industrial component tjff
40 cents, rails 70 cents, and uuli
ties 10 cents.
