Give Concert
In Afternoon

Several events involving large
groups of musicians are being
planed in celebration of National
Music week which begins today.
These programs are being spon
sored by the Salem district, Ore
gon Music Teachers association. ,
The opening event is the Salem
Church Choirs music iestival at
Salem high school auditorium in
which eieht choirs will participate.
Robert B. Walls of Oregon State
college will be guest director and
conduct the combined choirs' in a
final group.
The following program will be
gin at 3 o'clock and will be free
and open to the 'public. A silver
' efferinc will be taken to defray
expenses.

A string quintet will play a con
cert of chamber music at Waller
hall at 8:15 tonight. The group in
cludes musicians from Willamette
university college of music, Willis
Gates and Betty Kuhlman, violin
ists, Victor Palmason and Doris
McCain, violists, Bernard Sokolow,
violin-cellist. They will play from
the works of Mozart and Bee
thoven. The Willamette-Salem orchestra
'and the university a cappella
choir will present a concert Tues
day, May 8, in the Willamette
gymnasium, at 8:15. This will
mark the second public appear
ance of the orchestra which was
organized last spring under the di
rection of Dr. Willis Gates, asso
ciate professor of music at Wil
lamette. Eighty-four voices constitute the
a cappella choir directed by Dean
Melvin Geist, which will appear.
On Wednesday night at 8:15 a
Marion county high school Choir
Festival is scheduled for Salem
high school. Salem Academy, un
der Willis Reimer; Woodburn high
under Frank McDonnell; Silverton
under. Justin Dyrud and Salem
high under Howard F. Miller, will
sing. A massed chorus of all the
schools, accompanied by the Salem
high school orchestra, will be di
rected by Robert Walls of Oregon
State college in k-the finale. For
the latter numbers, Josephine Al
bert Spaulding and Corydon Blod
gett will be soloists. A silver of
fering will be taken.
On Thursday night the Salem
branch, Oregon Music Teachers
association will sponsor a program
by Robert Hord, assistant professor
of music at University of Oregon,
In Waller hall at 8:15 o'clock.
Mr. Hord is known as a concert
pianist of brilliance and artistry.
The public is invited to attend.

Summer Activities
For Teen-Age Girls
Miss Norma Wallace, teen-age
director of the YWCA, announces
a program of summer activities
for 6th through 9th grade girls.
Meetings will be held from June 6
through June 22 on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays from lu
a jn. to 3 pjn.
Among the many interesting ac
tivities will be textile painting,
diamatics, tours, cookouts. camp
and tin can cookery; games and
hikes. v '
The fee will be $1.00 per girl
plus membership in the YW. Regis
trations are limited to 20 girls and
must be in the office of the YWCA
by May 25.
The YWCA will sponsor a work
platoon for girls wishing to pick
strawberries and beans. An adult
will be in charge of the group.
Registrations must be in the office
of the YWCA by May 11.
The home of Mrs. Edward Roth
on North 21st street will be the
scene of the Pi Beta Phi alumnae
meeting Thursday night at 7:30
o'clock. Assisting hostesses will be

day evening in the Community

A plant auction concluded the
show with the proceeds added to
