Stocks Rallied
By Move to
End Strikes
NEW YORK, Feb. 8 -UP)- The
army's determination to end the
railroad strike immediately put
new life in the stock market to
day and broke a two-day slump.
; Tnat action, plus renewed indi
cations of inflation and high dol
lar earnings, sent stocks ahead by
a few cents to- mpre than $2 a
share and in some cases to $3.
The Associated Press average of
60 stocks advanced 30 cents to a
new high for 1950-51. Industrials
and utilities each gained 10 cents.
For one thing, the volume of
trading came to only 2,120,000
shares. It was difficult to get ex
cited about advancing prices with
the volume at that level. Yester
day when the market was going
down the volume came to 2,020,
000 shares.
And another damper was the
number of individual issues trad
ed only 1,160 the smallest
number in two months. Yesterday
that total came to 1,187 issues.
There were 616 issues advanc
ing and 293 declining with 101
new highs established on the move.
There were no new lows.
Grains Climb
To Highs on
News Strength
CHICAGO. Feb. 8 -- Pro
pelled by small cash grain receipts,
cold weather and expanding ex
ports, grains shot up to new high
levels for the past few years on
the board of trade today.
Wheat sold at its best price
since February, 1948; corn at its
best price since July, 1948; and
oats at the best price since May,
1948. Both March and May oats
sold above $1.00 and in the cash
market No 1 extra heavy white
oats brought 81.02.
At the close wheat was to 1
cent higher, corn -l higher,
oats -l higher, rye to 1
cent higher, soybeans 1 to 4
cents higher and lard 8 to 25 cents
a hundred pounds lower.
Herbert Hoover's support of the
administration's plan to send
wheat to India brought in new
buying. There had been consid
erable buying yesterday on the
news that President Truman had
asked for Hoover's support. Such
support was expected to make the
proposal get a better reception in
congress.
