People in Veterans Hospitals,
Institution Inmates. Welfare
Cases Need Yuletide Cheer
By Winston Taylor
Asst City Editor, The Statesman
It's not too late to do some Christmas shopping for people who
need not only the gifts but the attention and consideration that lie
behind them the aged in care homes, children in foster homes and
veterans in hospitals are representative of this group.
If you can t help before Christmas, their needs go on throughout
the year.
For war veterans in hospitals
at Portland and Vancouver the
gift suggestions came from local
veterans' organizations, with
which items may be left for de
livery. They include cigarets,
cookies, candy, playing cards, sta
tionery and stamps, puzzles, books
and magazines, personal items
such as shaving material and
handkerchiefs.
In addition, the Portland hos
pital has a room of children's toys,
books and other needs which the
veterans may choose to send their
children.
Suggestions Made
Marion county welfare office
makes the distribution to the aged.
the foster children and others
whose public checks don't pro
vide the little extras that make
December 25 Christmas. Workers
have made these suggestions for
gifts that individuals or groups
can secure for persons who have
no families or no one to care.
Those with relatives often are well
taken care of, adding to the dis
appointment of others.
Nearly 200 person! are on wel
fare grants in Marion county con
valescent or care homes for the
aged. For the convalescents, who
may be either bedfast or partly
ambulatory, the gifts might be
bed jackets or gowns, individual
games that can be played in bed
or in a chair, books and maga
zines and radios.
Others in care homes can use
clothing (especially men's), ma
terials for quilt pieces, yarn for
knitting and crocheting, cross
word and jigsaw puzzles.
Pleasure Rides
One instance in which inter
ested persons could give individ
ual attention is in taking residents
of the homes to church or for
pleasure rides.
For the approximately 100 chil
dren in more than 50 foster homes
of the county, the welfare office
will see that the "parents re
ceive the gifts, to be put under
the tree, as they would be for
their own children. The homes
themselves are "average," but the
children include those who have
been taken by the court from their
natural parents because of home
conditions and those who have
shown delinquency but are being
given another chance to overcome
it
They need the things that oth
er children get for Christmas, and
the age -range is full, from infancy
to 18 years. To fit the age and
the need, welfare workers select
from donations, including toys,
games, books, scrapbooks, person
al items and clothing, which
should be clean and wearable.
