Synopsis: Steve, and Nancy are
very hard at work in Santa's
hure offlee trying to answer all
the problems that have arisen
since they took over from St
Nick so he could have a rest.
CHAPTER XI
Cteve and Nancy rushed to the
telephone tree in Santa's office.
It was ringing so hard the branch
es shook. They each took off' a
phone, which didn't quiet the
tree, but it stopped shaking.
The dwarf on the other end of
the line started talking before
Steve could even get the 'phone to
nis ear, Dut ne aid catch enough
of what the little fellow was say
ing to know that something had
gone wrong in the motor car di
vision.
"Slow down so I can hear what
you are saying " Steve pleaded.
"It's th tacks." the dwarf iiH
"Someone has dropped a box of
xacKs onthe floor and all the
little racing cars hav flat tiroo
We haven't time to repair all these
cat tires. What shall we do?"
"Wellliy said Steve, "Gosh, I
don't know what to do. I'll think
it over and call you back."
. Steve looked over atancy and
he looked worried. "What's the
trouble?" Steve asked.
"They say half the typewriters
thev have readv to send tn Alhnv
won't write English. They lust
write fitparusn. What can you do
bout a thing like that?"
Steve hardly had time to say "I
don't know" before a messenger
dwarf came, bursting nto the of
fice out of breath.
"Pardon me for coming in with
out knocking, but it's so impor
tant.' he said. "Thirtv rtf tha
dolls are sick and I can't find out
what is the matter with them.
What will I do?"
"Oh, the poor dolls," Nancy
aia. "Steve, we must help them,
but rm sure mat I don't knew
what Is good for dolls. Do they
have stomach aches?" -
"I'm sure it isn't that. Miss
Nancy," the dwarf answered, "Be
cause dolls don't have stomachs.
I must get back to them now, but
If yeu have time, please come over
to laok t them."
All this time, the telephone tree
had not stopped ringing. Having
free moment, Steve picked up
receiver. "Square soap bub
bles?," he said. "Whoever heard
f square soap bubbles."
"Yes, that's just the trouble,"
ald the voice on the other end of
the line, "No one has ever heard
of square soap bubbles and they
won't believe ft What's mere,
children may get cut on the sharp
edges."
"Of all the silly things." Steve
aid, turning to Nancy. '"TheVve
got some bubble pipes that won't
Wow anything except square soap
bubbles." '
"What on earth do they think
we can do about a thing like that,"
Nancy said, sighing. "It seems to
me that we're getting ah awful
lot more problems than we ere
getting answers."
Mare and Mare Questions
If you could have watched Steve
and Nancy In Santa- Claus's big of
fice you would have felt sorrier
and sorrier for them. It seemed
like everyone wanted them to
straighten out problems, and the
more problems there were, the
more confused the children be
came. They were hungry by now, but
they were so busy telling people
they didn't know how to help
them that they didn't have time
to eat.
"No . more smoke?" Nancy said
Into the telephone. "You say the
trains have run out of smoke?"
"Now the trains are out of
moke," Nancy said to Steve.
"I've . gofc so many troubles I
can't trice time, to listen to yours,
too," Steve Said rather crossly, for
small bovs can -pa t milu r
when they are tired and hungry.
"If you won't help, I'll just teE
them to forget their old smoke,'
Nancy answered, for little girls
get just as tired and hungry as
little boys.
"No," said Steve suddenly Into
his 'phone receiver, "I don't care
if your old nolka dot horses are
wet and I don't care if their color
is running. Let it run until it gets
ail tired out."
"I'm not soinff ta answer an.
other telephone," said Nancy, sink
ing into a cnair. -Nor L . said
Steve.
Just then a messenger onened
the door and shouted, "A toy
machine gun is running wild and
shooting all over the room. What

Steve looked over at Nancy. She
had her head in her hands. He
felt like crying too. They were
too two tired children who had
found out that being Santa Claus
can be a lot of work. (Tamomw.
