Stamps for
Disabled Vets
New Project
Collecting used stamps of all
denominations above three cents
ii a new project being undertak
en by members of the Junior Wo
man s club in Salem, In coopera
tion with the national organization.
The stamps are being collected
for permanently hospitalized vet
erans in 129 hospitals throughout
the United States, to aid in rec
reational therapy.
The club will place containers
in downtown stores after New
Years Day. In the meantime larg
er collections are being solicited.
It is suggested that persons who
have become disinterested in col
lecting stamps may wish to give
them to the project. If so Mrs.
Wesley Goodrich, 2200 Laurel st.
will receive them. Old collections
especially, whether valuable or
not, may have taken on added
value through the years. Unless
the donor especially requests
otherwise, the collections will be
divided to be distributed to a large
number of men.
In saving the stamps, persons
are requested to include some of
the paper margin, so perforations
are intact. Christmas packages
may be a rich source of stamps
oz mgner denomination the com
mittee suggests.
In Dressing Up Windows for Holidays,
Follow Simplo Rules for Buying Fabric

Past Presidents or WEC will

By 8oe Gardner
If you are thinking of dress
ing up your Vindowi for the
holiday! and many readers
have been writing me about the
problems of
Li X V. J
own drapes
it is a good idea
to follow some
simple bail
rules.
A notice
will find a !
wealth of fab-1

goods depart-1
ments of local 1
stores, but be
fore planning any home sewing
project like this, make sure the
colon you want will harmonize
with those In your home. Judge
patterns and textures carefully.
A modern, rough textured fabric
might catch your eye, but if your
living room is done in Colonial
period, you are better off with
a chintz. Plain colored drapes
are best for rooms with pattern-

ed wall paper. You will probably
find that hangings that come
right down to the floor are bet
ter than shorter ones, unless you
have a set of country cottage
windows.
There are many tricks you can
work out for different effects in
drape making. Vertical striped
fabric will give height to a low
ceiling room. A softer touch is
achieved by tie backs or wide
ruffled styles.
You can save time with new
sewing machine attachments ob
tainable at your local sewing
centers. These Include rufflers,
edge stitchers, and cording foots.
The last will enable you to work
In scalloped edges or even Gre
cian scroll designs after a little
practice.
For valances a swag style is
a simple drape to make and can
be combined with a set of drapes
you now have for a new note.
You might even progress to cov
ering a valance board for a dec
orator touch,
