For Filling Purposes
Less Expensive Cookies Make Family

No more beautiful staging for
a garden club event has ever been
made in Salem than the Christ
mas Greens show which opened
Tuesday , at the Isaak Walton
League hall at the end of Cottage
street. The show will be open
Wednesday from 10 a. m. to 10
E. m. No admission is charged
ut a silver offering is accepted.
The show is. sponsored by the
Salem Garden club of which Mrs.
Ben Maxwell is president.
While there is a great variety
of ideas for gay Chris tmases, as
a whole there is a more serious
note this year than formerly found
in Salem garden shows. And while
there is plenty of silver and gold
.and other colors added, there Is
'also more of the natural green.

season, written by some of the
Garden club members.

In the main hall, too, natural
greenery predominates. More
than 14 garden clubs have ar
rangements at the show. Among
the outstanding arrangements in
this group is the colorful setting

lem Heights. "Snow - covered"
window sills added to the setting
where warm red coloring was
used throughout.

that section of the hall. Even
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
was brought into the scene when
Miss Schryver conceived the idea
of lighting the huge elk's head
which hangs over the mantel at
the halL .

terials for wreaths, as well as a
variety of other Christmas dec
Orations and greens, are offered
for sale, proved a ' busy place
throughout Tuesday afternoon.
The bazaar will be continued
Wednesday.
Giving a special holiday touch

We recently published several rich Christmas cookies, suit
able for giving as gifts and they were the richer, more expensive
sorts that take lots of time.
So, to please the housewife who needs more and larger cook
ies for general eating during the holiday season, we oblige with
the following:
MINCEMEAT ILLtli BAKS
Fillin
cup sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cups mincemeat
Vi teaspoon lemon juice
Crust
1 cup margarine or butter
1 cup sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup brown sugar, firmly
packed
2V cups rolled oats
Combine sugar and cornstarch. Add mincemeat and cook
slowly until thick and clear. Add lemon juice. CooL Sift flour
and salt together. Add sugar and rolled oats. Cut in margarine,
making a crumbly mass. Place half of crumbs in buttered oblong
baking pan (9x 13x2-inches). Pat down by hand. Spread with
cooled mincemeat mixture. Sprinkle remaining crumbs over top,
patting smooth. Bake in a moderate oven (350) approximately 45
minutes. After baking, allow cookies to remain in pan to cooL -When
cold, cut into bars as needed. Makes 2 dozens.
COCONUT POM-POMS
Yield: 6 dozen cookies
1 cup margarine or butter 2 cups sifted flour
M cup sugar V teaspoon salt ,
. 2 teaspoons vanilla Vi pound pecan halves
Shredded coconut
Cream margarine, sugar and vanilla until fluffy. Sift flour
with salt and add to creamed mixture, blending thoroughly. Shape
dough around each half pecan to form 1-inch balls. Roll in shred
ded coconut. Place on ungreased cooky sheet. Bake In a slow oven
(325) about 20 minutes. Cool and store in loosely covered con
tainer. Makes 6 dozen.
YULE CRISPIES
4 cup margarine or butter 2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup sugar Vi teaspoon salt
4 egg yolks 3 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla cup finely chopped pecans
IVt cups sifted flour
Cream margarine. Gradually add sugar and beat until fluffy.
Add egg yolks and vanilla and beat until creamy. Sift flour, bak
ing powder and salt. Add to mixture. Combine cinnamon and
pecans. Mold dough into 1-inch balls and roll in cinnamon-pecan
mixture. Place on ungreased baking sheet and flatten with the
bottom of a tumbler which has been dipped in sugar. If desired,
place candied cherry in Tenter of each cooky. Bake in a moder
ate oven i375) for 8 to 10 minutes. Store in loosely covered con
tainer. Makes 5 dozen.
DARK SECRETS
4 egg whites 3 cups corn flakes"
teaspoon salt N 1 cup semi-swee,t chocolate
Vt cup sugar chips
1 teaspoon vanilla
Combine egg whites and salt and beat until foamy. Grad
ually add sugar. Beat until stiff. Fold in corn flakes, chocolate
bits and vanilla. Drop from teaspoon onto buttered cookie sheet.
Bake In a moderate oven (350) about 15 minutes. Makes 4 dozen.
