Harnessing of
A-Power Said
Long fay Off
Harnessing atomic energy to its
full peacetime potential is a long
way off, it was asserted in Salem
Monday by a Reed college physi
cist. Dr. William L. Parker.
Parker was 'one of the instruc
tors designated by the atomic en
ergy commission to train Oregon
leaders in radiological monitoring
last summer.
The war situation is postponing
the day, said Parker, when atomic
energy will be used in peaceful
ways to provide power. But war
or no war, much remains to be
done before this peacetime atomic
use materializes, he added.
Dr. Parker explained the fol
lowing drawbacks, in addition to
the Influence of war:
1. The net loss in fissionable ma
terials in the process of creating
Plutonium must be overcome, lest
the raw materials be depleted.
2. Either new uranium deposits
must be found or methods of ex
tracting it from low grade ore must
be improved.
3. A way must be found to dis
pose safely of radioactive ashes
left in the process of creating
atomic power.
4. Production pace would be in
sufficient as things now stand, as
power now produced industrially
over the U. S. is the equivalent of
an atom bomb explosion every 24
minutes.
Dr. Parker spoke before a Salem
Chamber of Commerce luncheon
which marked the official opening
of the annual Christmas seal sale
of the Marion county tuberculosis
association. Frank B. Bennett in
troduced the speaker, explained
the TB campaign and presented
its leaders to the chamber audi
ence of 200. Vice President Russel
Pratt presided.
