records will be scarce as hen's
tetfth in the January 1 bowl games
and, as matters stand now, the
Ssst-season Jausiness will add lit
t light to the scramble for na
tional honors.
Of the seven major teams able
to answer today to the roll call of
unbeaten and untied, two Army
and Princeton are allergic to
bowls and a third Oklahoma
appears to have had enough of
them., . - j--
Oklahoma authorities, in an
nouncing opposition to a post
season game this year, left the way
open, however, for the players
themselves to make the final
choice. -.- : J "
If. not, that leaves Kentucky,
California, Wyoming and Loyola
of California as unblemished bowl
prospects, with the latter two
boasting unusually strong teams
but unimposing schedules.
Here's how we'd rate major
bowl possibilities going into the
November stretch:'
Virtual cinch California.

Good bets Illinois, Tennessee,
Clemson, Miami (Fla.).

Kentucky took : another stride
toward the Southeastern Confer
ence crown and Sugar Bowl by
walloping Mississippi State. But
after North Dakota this week the
Wildcats get ' rugged Tennessee,
and the Vols stand a good chance
of wrecking the Kentucky play

plans to play in the Cotton Bowl
at Dallas were it not for the Nov.
SO game with Texas A. and M.

ed down to drills today in prepar
ation for its final game of the sea
son Saturday night against Pacific
university at Forest Grove.
Eight regulars from the Bear
eat eleven are doubtful starters
for the Pacific encounter. Bill
Ewaliko, Al Minn, Jim McHale
and Paul Jewell joined the injury
roster as the result of bruising ac
tion in Saturday's loss to Whit

Bowe, Charlie Nee, Bob Hall and
Keith Sperry. Both Bowe and
Sperry saw limited action in the
Saturday game.
Pacific, with a 5-win, 3 loss
Cason today, has defeated both
nfield and Whitman, victors over
the Willamette squad. They lost
to Lewis and Clark, Pacific Luth
eran and College of Idaho. Other
victories were over Western Wash
ington, Chico State and OCE.
Despite the heavy loss to 1 in
juries suffered by Coach Chester
Stackhouse's team, the two are
expected to be - about on par for
Saturday night's encounter. Re
serves shoved into the breach in
the Whitman game produced well
and may carry much of the brunt

Vikings RIay Have All-Vet
Quint in Starting Lineup
An all-letterman starting lineup is likely for the Salem Viking
basketball team when the court season gets under way, Coach Harold
Hauk indicated Sunday.
Six veterans of Salem's 1950 state championship club Larry
Baggett, Dave Chamberlain, Don
McKenzie, Larry Paulus. Wayne
Walling and Deb Davis are back
and five of them will furnish the
playing nucleus for the 1950-51
squad. Chemberlain is the lone
starter from last year's club.
' Up from . last season's junior
varsity squad are Merle Baum
gart, Don Blischke, Bob Hazel,
Elmer Haugen, Gene Jones, Steve
Merchant, Larry Scheelar, Burt
Harp and Conder. Scheelar is ex
pected to add needed heighth to
the 6-foot plus average of the
starters with his 6-3 frame. -
The 1950 sophomore squad adds
Jack Bradtl and Don Heston, and
Jack Bishop, Jack Cobb and Bob
Miller are up from the junior
high school ranks.
Hauk expects to trim this squad
to 15 after Thanksgiving Day
when Loren Mort will take over
the Junior varsity and Ken
Brophy the sophomores. He plans
to chop it to 10 or 12 after the
first of the year.
Working in the - No. 2 team
against Baggett, Chamberlain,
McKenzie, Paulus and Walling
have been Blischke, Hazel, Schee
lar, Bradtl and Cobb. Conder,
Haugen, Davis and Jones are ex
pected to join the drills this week
with the close of football action.
The Vikings get their first taste
of real competition December 8
when they meet McMinnville in
an encounter here-

12-JP)-Aii injury today interrupt
ed Jockey Willie Shoemaker's record-breaking
pace for America's
1950 jockey championship.
Shoemaker's foot was caught
against the starting gate when
Mosaic, his eighth mount of the
day, reared completely over.
Shoemaker . was taken to San
Diego for x-ray examination, his
plan to ride in 10 races given up.
The 19-year-old El Paso, Texas,
rider had increased his 1950 vic
tories to 326 with two wins be
fore the accident.
Tillamook Man
Cited After Wreck
H. E. Yancey, Tillamook, was
arrested by Salem police Sunday
on a charge of following too close
after 'his car was involved in a
four-vehicle accident, in the 900
block on North Capitol street
. Yancey posted $10 bail. Offi
cers said damage was minor on
all the autos.

Slicker Play
Eight teams took advantage of
ideal fall weather Sunda to
complete the opening matches of
play in the Salem Golf club's an
nual slicker tournament.
Highlight of the day on the
links was a hole-in-one on the
125-yard No. 12 by Howard Wick
lund. Wicklund used a No. 6 iron
to drop his tee shot. His partner
for the WI league match, Dr.
George S. Hoffman followed with
a birdie but. the near-perfect
shooting wasn't enough to keep
the pair from losing their opening
match to a Miller-Evenden team,

In other WI action Ralph
Mapes and Jack Russell scored a
2- triumph over the English
Erickson combo. Ingram and
Schafer shut out Hoar and Thom
as, 3-0, and Larson-Fish divided

But there is another interest
ing point to this Saturday game
at Walla Walla. The last-half
Whitman 30-point bursty was a
prime example of how a ball
club can explode, can catch fire.
And such an explosion arises
from a team's being extremely
high psychologically speaking.
The Whites have been no great
outfit this season but the spark
was certainly applied to 'em
Saturday in this anual WU mix
which Is the one the Missionar
ies always want most to win ...
Been an Odd Season
- It baa been a strange season
for Coach Chester Stackhouse
and his Willamette. Up through
the middle of October the 'Cats
had one of the top small-college
records on the coast what with
a string of four straight wins
over Central Washington, Col
lege of Idaho, Whitworth and
Chico State. Then came the 21-
21 tie with Hawaii U wXich
could have been termed a moral
victory for Willamette since they
outplayed a favored Rainbow
club . . . Since then the Bearcats
have been unable to regain the
victory column, though they tied
CPS 0-0 .. . The losses have
been to Lewis and Clark, Lin-
field and now Whitman. The
WU's held the tremendously
favored LC's surprisingly well,
the LJnfield tilt was so close it
could have gone either way and
the Whit result was just one of
those things ...
And Injuries Hurt
Looking back, it seems per
fectly in order to blame injur
ies for a large share of the
Stackhousers' late-season mis
fortunes. In the latter part of the
campaign at least two key men
have been missing from the line
up In each start . . . And then
there is the guy from way out
yonder who pipes up with: "Hey!
Maybe it all can be blamed on
those black cats!" . . .
