In each circuit and, barring the
ugly Hem known as upset should
roll oa to the various and coveted
championships. Eugene Is odds-on
the favorite in the Big Six and
Woodburn seems to have the situ
ation well In hand in the WVL.
Sacred Heart's victory ova- Stay
ton last week establishes the Cards
as the big threat in the Marion
Polk. Banks high's Braves appear
to be a shoo-in f or Yawama hon
ors. Jefferson's Lions are the tig
favorites in the Marion B, al
though they have a key tat with
Sublimity Friday. Another key
clash that could mean title comes
in the Junior high loop Friday
when the unbeaten Leslie Blues
and Parrish Cards get together.
Taking them league by league:
Big Six Eugene's unbeaten
Axemen have a breather at home
with the University high eleven, a
non-leaguer. But the Albany
Bulldogs will be active at Spring
field and Salem at COrralhs in
league mixes. Bend is finished
with league committments . and
plays Medford at Bend Friday.
WVL ML Angel is at Dallas,
Sandy at Canby .and Estacada atj
Silverton Friday night, and Mo
laHa is at Woodburn Friday af-,
ternoon. Dallas, Canby and Wood
burn should have little trouble
notching wins, but the Estacada
Silverton struggle could be a
whoop-de-do for fair.
Tawama Dayton has the mis
fortune of having to play at Banks
Friday against easily the classiest
club in the circuit. WiOamina is
at Amity, Yamhill at North Mar
lon and Sheridan at Sherwood for
the others, with favorite's roles
going to Willamina, North Marlon
and Sheridan.
Marion B: Jefferson is at Sub
limity la the key dash and Che
mawa at Gervais, both afternoon
ers Friday. The Jeffmen could
cop the title with a victory over
the Saints. Mill City Is idle Fri
day. Marion-Polk: Sacred Heart will
be at Cascade for a 1:30 o'clocker
and Salem Academy at Stayton
for a two o'clock fixture. The
Cards and Eagles hold the favor
ed roles.
Junior high: The Leslie Blues
and Parrish Cards clash at 6:30
pjn. at Leslie, and in the after
noon game at 3:45 it will be the
Leslie Golds at West Salem. The
Srlera JVs go postward again
next Monday night at Leslie with
Corvallis JVs. the opposition.
Cottage Grove plays at Lebanon
Friday night, and in the collegiate
round it will be Oregon College of
Education and OTI of Klamath
Falls in a Saturday nighter at Al
bany, Whitman at Pacific Friday
night. College of Idaho at Linfield
Saturday night and Willamette at
; College of Puget Sound Saturday

Technicality Threatens Rickey
Ball Career as Brook Job Ends
NEW YORK, Oct 25-4P)-An involved deal and a section of small
print in the Major league rules rose up today to confuse Branch
Rickey's future in baseball.
It was learned today that Rickey, in disposing of his 23 per cent
stock in the Brooklyn club, agreed
to accept the $1,05,000 purchase
price in installment payments
covering a 10 year period.
Major league rule 20 reads:
"No club or stockholder or of
ficial of a club shall, directly or
indirectly, own stock or have any
financial Interest in any other
club in its league."
This brought up the question of
how the Brooklyn general man
ager could, by following this type
of .contract, go through with his
plans to remain in baseball.
Rickey has been reported head
ed for an executive role with the
Pittsburgh Pirates, whose owner,
John W. Galbreath, is a long time
friend. Other rumors have had
him buying into the St Louis
Browns.
Asked about this fine legal
point, Rickey said: "I have no
ownership in the Dodgers now."
Ford Frick, president of the Na
tional league, said, "I have not
seen the contract and I know
nothing about the terms."
Baseball Commissioner A. B.
Chandler, at hia home in Versail
les, Ky, declined comment
There seemed no likelihood that
the involved deal could keep Rick
ey out of baseball, if he chose to
take a spot elsewhere.
The major league rule could be
circumvented by Rickey selling
his rights to the debt to a bank
or through discounted notes. This
way Rickey could step completely
out of the Brooklyn picture.
Ball Meetings
Scheded Soon
(Continued from preceding page)
have declared willingness to give
up the drafting of players from
lower minor circuits.
The annual draft meeting will
be held here Nov. 16. On the
same day, the owners will de
termine whether players shall
share in the 9973,000 paid for
radio and television rights for
the 1950 world series.'
The money in the past has gone
into a central fund, from which
player pensions are paid.
Elimination or modification of
the bonus player rule also will be
considered Nov. 16.

making many enemies among his would-be customers. Cutting his own
throat is another way of putting it Then too, we have at least one
press in Salem that isn't afraid to do some first class bellering when
the baseball natives aren't being treated fairly.
Dousing the Senators move with cold water many have given
Gregory and his Portland Beaver pals quite a chuckle. But we're sure
the day will come when hell eat those words, after they're thrown in
his face by 800 owners of the same Senators ....
Mr. Sick Congratulates Salem for Move
On the ether hand, we have a telegram from another infla
ential man, Emti Sick. Owner of the vast Sick's Brewing domain
and the Seattle Rainlers, Mr. Sick throws nothing cold on the
corporation. His telegram: "Dear Al: My congratulations to yon
and my friends in Salem on your fine progressive move in tak
ing over the Salem baseball franchise. I wish yon all good lade
and feel you will have it" Signed Emil Sick.
To us that one piece of paper from Mr. Sick far overshadows the
elongated effort by Gregory. And knowing that a man of Mr. Sick's
caliber is pulling for the local corporation gives.it a real boost (Who
knows? He may send a ballplayer or two in his organization this way.)

Vikings Shoot
For 2nd Win
Salem high's football Vikings
will be aiming for their second
straight victory Friday night at
Corvallis when they lock grips
with the Spartans in. the annual
tussle. The Viks last week nab
bed their first nod of the cam
paign, a 19-6 conquest of Lebanon,
and immediately took particular
note of the fact that Corvallis was
at the same time losing to a weak
McMlnnville eleven.
The Spartans, coached by Del
Scott have thus far defeated
Newberg 25-12, lost to Bend 35-0,
tied Lebanon 6-6, downed Spring
field 14-0, bowed to Eugene 47-13
and went down 13-6 before Mc
Mlnnville. By comparison, Salem
lost to Bend, 26-13, beat Lebanon
19-6 but lost to Springfield 12-8.
Consequently the outcome of
Friday's rassle looms a tossup. -
The Spartans work both from
the T and single wing formations.
Scatback Bill Anderson, a 141
pounder, Pete Schulein. 176
pound halfback and Quarterback
Duane S peers, a 160-pounder,
pace the Corvallis attack. Line
sharpies .include Olan Ford, 150
pound end and Hal Ridenour,
220-pound tackle.
Having remodeled his squad
considerably before the Lebanon
game, Salem Coach Loren Mort
no doubt will have his revised
lineup in starting action Friday.
Mort will announce the starters
later.
