Deadline for application for ab
sentee ballots in the November
election will be Friday, Marie
county clerk's office remineded
this weekend. About 200 persons
have applied so far, regarded as
a normal number for a non-presidential
vote. '
Ballots may be secured at the
office, for immediate return, or by
mail, to be returned by November
1, when ballot boxes will be turn
ed over to the sheriff for distri
button.
Application may be made only
by a person who will be out of the
county all of election day or who
is unable to vote due to illness.
One person cannot apply for ab
sentee ballot for another indivi
dual.
A few requests have come from
servicemen, deputies said, but
these can be honored only if the
serviceman is registered as a voter,
Mrs. Miles, 87,
Succumbs at
Salem Home
Mrs. Mary K. Miles died Sunday
at her residence at 454 N. 14th st.
following an illness of two months.
She was 87.
Mrs. Miles had lived in Salem
for 47 years and was a seamstress
at Miller's department store for
many years until she retired in
1938.
She was the widow of Joseph J.
Miles who died in 1903 shortly
after the family moved here from
Turner. Deceased was born in
Pennsylvania, June 25, 1863, and
was married at Clay Center, Kan
sas in 1891.
Mrs. Miles was a flower-garden
enthusiast and - had furnished
many floral decorations for the
First Evangelical United Brethran
church to which she belonged.
Surviving are two daughters.
Anna and Lois Miles, both of
Salem; a sister, Mrs. Sadie Chase,
Grasham; and a brother, P. M.
Kakanaur, Monrovia, Calif.
Services will be announced later
by the Clough-Barrick chapel. The
family requests that, in lieu of
flowers, friends contribute to a
memorial fund to be used for mis
sion work.

Farm-Labor Meet
To Hear Review of
Ballot Proposals
Members of Salem's Farm-La
bor council will hear a review of
Oregon's nine ballot proposals at
a meeting at the labor temple to
night at 8 o'clock.
Charles A. Sprague, Statesman
publisher, will discuss the meas
ures which will be voted on at the
November general election, ac
cording to council spokesmen.
Motion pictures depicting the
role machinery has played in the
last 100 years also are slated to be
shown.

Silverton Dies,
Mother of 15
SILVERTON, Oct 22 Mrs.
Doris Leona Bailer, mother of 45
living children, died here Sunday.
She was 58.
Born at Cripple Creek, Colo,
Mrs. Bailer moved to Silverton
when a child and had lived here
ever since.
Surviving are the widower, Sam
Bailer; a brother, Leslie Elliott of
Silverton; and the following chil
dren: Vera, Richard and Ralph
Bailer, Mrs. Verda Burr, Mrs.
Marion Neimi, Mrs. Cleo Martin,
Mrs. Irma Brenden, Mrs. Clarita
Keser and Mrs. Marie Larson, all
of Silverton; Mrs. Virginia Large,
Turner; Mrs. Mae Willhite, Forest
Grove; Mrs. Janet Foster, Med
ford; Mrs. Velma Sgroggins, Port
land; William Bailer, Port Orch
ard, Wash.; Robert Bailer, Fergus

Thursday at the Senator hotel for
a premier presentation of a new
series of films on high schol driver-education,

Saturday.
Aimed at the 'teen age driver
problem, the films are designed as
instructional aids for use in the
classroom, sponsors said. .
General Motors produced the
films with the counsel of the Na
tional Education association which
also has approved distribution of
kits of the films to school systems
throughout the country, said C.
A. Walters, club chairman.
The USS constitution, "Old Iron
sides," carried i, 24 - pound guns,
compared with the 18-pounders of
British frigates of the time.
