The making of plans for the school year and the election of John
Gundran as student council president highlighted the year's first
meeting of the student council Monday ,at Salem high schooL
Gundran, a senior, is sergeant-at-arms of "S" club and a halfback
on the football squad. The first new business of the meeting was the
laying of plans for the coming Community chest drive. Two. com
mittees were appointed for this
task, with Cleo Keppinger and
Dick Evans as chairmen. Serving
on the committees are. Carol Hud
son, Eunice Peckenpaugh, Billy
Miller, Leadell Davis, Juanita Mc
Devitt, Bill Nelson, David Black-

Jim- Boone was appointed . as
chairman of a committee to in
vestigate the advisability of buy
ing advertising space in the local
papers and utilizing posters to pub
licize Salem high football games..
The rally squad was put in
charge of arranging a bonfire rally
before the Salem high-Astoria grid
encounter. The yell leaders report
ed that plans were being formulat
ed for. a serpentine, before that
game also.
Norma Hamilton was selected to
head a . committee to try to start
having "skies" again. Oskies are
all-school parties held at the
YMCA. '

clipped a north Salem service sta
tion for $85 Monday.
' The first gyp artist sold the op
erator the board, 'a" sure-fire
money maker," for $1.50. The
second came along, an hour later
and won $160 on it' But' he set-,
tied for $85 which reportedly was
all the money on hand at the sta

A short time later the proprietor
decided he had been bilked and'
called in city police. He told them
the board was ' designed so that
any amount of money could be bet

The follow-up man, placing'
small bets, lost eight times in a.',
row. .Then he bet $2 and drew a
slip reading "Army, pays 10-to-l.-
($20). The next time he bet $7
