10 Carloads o Lumber Stolen;
Police Break Up Swindle Racket

. PORTLAND, Sept. ll-(JP)-Two men, accused of swindling 10 car
loads of lumber valued at $25,000, were taken to the Polk county jail
tonight after their arrest by officers of two counties.
- A third man was arrested here tonight and Capt. -Howard Kelly
of the Multnomah county sheriffs office said a fourth was sought. -He
identified those arrested as Jack Gordon Hanley, 22, Grah
am; Jack Richard Brace. 25. Port
land, and Joe Tony KosM, zi.

Charges of larceny by bailee,
involving lumber belonging to
the Star Lumber company of Eu
gene and the Hodge Brothers
company of Grand Ronde, have
been filed against them, 'Kelly
said.
Chief Sheriffs Deputy Tony
Neufeldt of Polk county said R. D.
Hodge, of the Hodge Brothers
company reported he had hired
the men to truck the lumber to
Portland. There they were to ob
tain rail cars . for shipment to
destinations named by Hodge,
Neufeldt said.

sold the lumber to other brokers

Seven cars already had been
shipped, Kelly and Neufeldt said,
five of them to the midwest. One
car was stopped at Portland and
another at Gresham. Attempts are
being made to locate the others.
Hodge owned five and the Star
Lumber company two.

trucks and trailer loads of lum
ber parked off the highway and
another at Gresham loading plat

The lumber would fill three
rail cars. Kelly said.
Brace owned two of the trucks
and Hanley was a driver, the
officer said. Koski was arrested
while waiting for a bus. His bail

mission informed him today.

The house today override Presi
dent Truman's veto of a bill to
permit an estimated 85.000 Japan

in the United States or Hawaii to
become citizens.
It was the second veto rejected
by the house during the day. Ear
ner it overrode the president s ve
to of a bill to give out-patient
(clinic) medical treatment to all
Spanish-American war veterans,
regardless of the cause of their
ailment ,
If the senate also overrides, it
will be the first time in the 81st
congress, that a public law has
gone into the statute books over
the president's objections. The
house vote on the citizenship bill
was 307 for the bill and 14 against
it or 93 more than the two-thirds
required to override a veto. The
votewas on the question of pass
ing tbVbUl despite the president's
disapproval.

PORTLAND. Sept 14-WVThe
internal revenue department was
asked today to withdraw on cancel
a ruling permitting the income tax
deduction of fines levied against
overweight and overload trucks.
The reauest was made In a res
olution passed before the close of
the four-day convention of the
American association of motor ve
hicle administrators here.
The resolution contended that
the ruling "encourages the law
violator and penalizes the operator
who obeys the law. ,

President Truman said today he
has authorized the start of "in
formal discussions" on a Japanese
peace treaty.
In a statement read to his week
ly news conference he added:

we are exploring the possibility of
ending the state of war with Ger

Secretary of State Acheson was
directed to initiate procedural
talks on a Japanese treaty with
members of the far eastern com

senate tonight passed a $17,
192,000,000 emergency defense bill
to expand America's military pow
er and arm her allies against com
munist aggression.'
Approval by voice vote came af
ter the senate voted to shut off
American, financial and economic
aid to any nation that sells arms
or goods useful for military pur
poses to countries behind the iron
curtain. j
The big defense bill carries $11,
736,000,000 to build up this coun
try's military machine and $4,000,
000,000 to help arm the other free
nations f the world.

This proposal was ruled out of
order by Senator Elmer Thomas
(D-Okla.) who was presiding at

appropriation bllL where It did
not belong.

at home, work and play Thurs

Harvey Stanton, 69. was knock'
ed unconscious but escaped with
cuts and bruises when he fell at
his home, 540 Vista ave., about

Harvey Whitfield, Salem route
6, incurred multiple fractures of
both legs when a huge log rolled
on him at Oregon Pulp and Paper
Co. Thursday morning. He was
caught when the timber kicked
back off the carrier chain as it
was being sawed.
Whitfield was reported in fair
condition at Salem General hos
pital early today..

Philomath's chief of police, O. R.
PettengilL has been accused of as
sault with a dangerous weapon as
a result of shooting a Eugene man.
A circuit court grand jury in
dicted him for wounding George
Boehn slightly on July 3. At that
time, the chief said he fired at
Boehn who refused to obey orders
to halt his car. Pettengill said he
was aiming at a tire. The bullet
hit Boehn in the back.

Twenty-five new cases of polio
mey litis were reported in Oregon
last week, the state board of health
reported today. ' i
Six cases each were reported by
Lane county and Portland. The
cumulative total for the year
158 cases, with 104 cases for the
corresponding period last year.
