Creek Bridge Awarded

contract for building the Blowout
creek bridge over the North San
tiam river for the Idanha road has
been awarded to VaDare Construc
tion Co., Portland, by the army en
gineers. -
The bridge, part of the Detroit
dam project, will cost $46,845. , . "

Police and prison guards are
searching for Edwin Wayne Speer,
22-year-old convict who escaped
Tuesday while working under gun
guard on state property near the
Salem naval and marine armory.

exander said Speer slipped away
from a guard armed with a rifle
while clearing brush from-a ditch
near airport road about 3:43 pjn.
A former resident of Aumsville,
Speer was serving six years on
Charges of larceny and burglary
after being sentenced in Marion
and Benton counties. He entered
the penitentiary in August of this
year. . j
Prison authorities said Speer
weighs 173 pounds, is S feet 8
inches tall, has blonde hair, blue
eyes, a fair complexion and med
ium build. .

Registration at schools In the
Salem district was up 208 over
opening-day figures Tuesday,
Superintendant JTranic . tsennen
reported to school directors last
night.
There are now 7,688 students
enrolled, and past experience in
dicates that figure will approach
the 8,000 mark by late October,
Bennett said.
The student body Is 359 larger
than on the second day last year.
Most of the increase is in the ele
mentary department which has
more than doubled in the past 10
years.

dents this year for a total of 1,843.
Three teachers will be shifted
today to compensate for the vag
aries of enrollment. Instructors
from Grant will be transferred to

Swegle will go to Auburn.
Superintendant Bennett said the

McKinley grade school Is "burst
ing at the seams." Construction
of four more classrooms is under
way there.
Other grade schools with hefty
increases are Salem Heights (45),
Washington (63), Bush (33), En-
glewood (32) and Lincoln (34).
Grant school is down 20 from
last year due chiefly to a small
first-grade enrollment. Hayesville
has only 8 first graders compared
with 28 in 1949. They will share
a room .with some of the second
graders. r
School directors, in other bus
inessr decided to call for bids on
additions at Richmond and High'
land schools following the Sep
tember 28 meeting of the board.
Architect s plans will be submit
ted for a final check on that date.
Exterior of the new construction
will match the present buildings.
Directors also decided to have
a dozen houses at the proposed
site of a south Salem high school
appraised before negotiating for
their purchase.
They granted a request from the
Labish rural school district that
seventh and eighth graders attend
school here as tuition students.
They will go to Parrish junior
nigh.

state milk marketing administra
tion today set a Sept. 25 hearing
date on a producer request for a
2 cent price boost
The request was made by the
pooling agents for most of the
Portland area producers. They
also want a change In allocating
quotas and cancellation of the
milk agency's acting as polling
agent for independent producers.
On the quota "issue, the pro
ducers want quotas set on the
basis of total weight of milk in
stead of solely on a butterf at basis.

Voung's bay was dragged today
for trace of a private plane that
vanished In the fog last night
while trying to land here with
three persons aboard.
In the plane were Roland Mc-
Ginnis, 55, Astoria farmer-pilot;
his son-in-law, Norris Santeen, of
Seattle, and a six-year-old grand'
daughter, Sherry Santen.
A mackinaw jacket of the
child's was found in the Lewis and
Clark river and Young's bay wat
ers. It was believed washed there
by tidal action in the bay. Pri
vate planes had searched the vi
cinity since morning and were
called back when the coat was
located. It was identified by the
girl i mother.

Small Ships
Feared Lost
In Atlantic

Rescue vessels criss-crossed the
storm-lashed waters off - south
western Nova Scotia tonight
searching for two small ships.
The engines of one were dead and
most of her gear had washed
away: the other has been unheard
from since early this morning;
Two other 50-foot swordfishing
vessels which had been caught in
the' fierce Atlantic hurricane
which struck the south coast of
the province were safe at Wood's
Harbor. N. S a f t e r battling
through pounding seas and high
winds with all hands bailing with
buckets.
Still missing were the Nickerson
and Sir Echo. Each carried six
men. , .
Lashing seas and a thick fog
hampered the search being con
ducted by Canadian and United
States ships for the two missing
vessels.
