Charley Salas, a relatively un
known Mexican-Italian welter
weight from Phoenix, Ariz., out
foxed and outpunched lightweight
Champion Ike Williams tonight to
win a unanimous 10 round deci
sion. It was Williams' second
straight defeat within a month.
Williams weighed 139 pounds.
Salas was seven pounds heavier.
For Williams, who has knocked
out every lightweight that has
challenged him, it was the second
straight defeat by a welterweight
Williams was upset by Sugar Cost
ner a month ago in Philadelphia.
Salas was a seven-to-one un
derdog but the 21 -year old Ari
zonian, who has never been
knocked out, waded in after Wil
liams from tht first bell and was
still throwing punches at Ike at
the end.

St Louis Cardinals, 9-0, before a

Mike Goliat and Willie Jonea
fired the big guns in the Phillies'
11-hit attack off four Cardinal :
hurlers. Goliat. coming through
with a triple, double and a single,
drove in four runs. Jones sent hi

Harry (The Cat) Brecheen. first
of the four Redbird pitchers,? was
the loser as Johnson chalked, up
his fourth victory without a defeat
Johnson, making hit first start
since July 4th, walked six and
fanned the same number. He also

the Cardinals batters but when
the chips were down he was un
touchable. Stan Musial got the

Tigers nipped the pacers, 1-0, in
a tight hurling duel between the
Tigers' Bob Kerrigan and the
Yaks' Bill Bradford., Kerrigan
racked up his 17th pitching win of
the campaign as he checked the
foe bn eight hits. Bradford gave
but five. A double by Jose Babe
knocked in the only run of the
game in the second inning.
Victoria's Athletics tallied 16
runs in the first four innings to
seven rounds, Williams two and
one was even.
There were no knockdowns but
Salas kept a left hook and a left
jab in Williams' face most of tha
way and frequently got the better
of the harder exchanges.
The attendance was estimated
at 6,500.
