The bids involve oil burners,

summarize Red Cross activities of
the past year at the annual din
ner meeting of the Marion county
Red Cross chapter Monday.
The meeting is slated for 6:15
pjn. at Salem Chamber of Com
merce. All persons who coatribut
ed to the ..Red Cross this year are
eligible to attend.
U.S. Sen. Wayne Morse is the

speaker. The program will Include
a report by a Junior Red Cross

On Debate Team
Thomas Brand, son of Justice

bate with University of California
Tuesday, according to a Stanford
press release.
The Jof f re debate is considered
one of the country's collegiate
forensic classics. Since its estab
lishment in ,1895, Stanford holds
a 28-27 edge in the series. Three
students from each school par
ticipate, but judging is on an in
dividual basis."-' :

In Timber Tax
Receipts Given
Oregon! has colected more than
$1,000,000 in timber harvest taxes
since the levy was ' authorized
nearly three years ago,-, the state
tax commission has announced.
Funds collected from the tax.
fwhich is 5 cents per 1,000 board
feet, are divided, 40 per cent to
the state forest research and ex
perimental fund and 60 per cent
for research . in utilization of
waste resulting from timber har
vests. Cost of collecting the $1,000,-
000- has been only $63,139, the
commission announced. ;
The third fiscal year of opera
tion will end June 30. Collections
totaled $375,265 in 1948, $390,258
in 1949 and $233,212 as of April 30
of this year.
Operators who neglect to pay
the tax have been fined a total of
$11,276 since July of 1947. Field
men are constantly searching for
delinquents and are collecting
payments that were due as far
back as 1946.
