Against FEPC
-WASHINGTON, May MV
Southerners limbering up for a
- marathon filibuster said today they
would wage "all-out war" against
the administration's FEPC bill In
the senate next week. -.
Senator. Johnston (D-SCL a
leader of the Dixie group, served
notice of a showdown battle in
a communique for his colleagues,
saying !
We are thoroughly convinced
... that the passage of this monstrosity
will mean a 'Pearl Harbor for the
south.' "
Democratic Leader Lucas (I11V
has called for debate Monday; on
the bill to create a fair employ
ment practices commission. This
agency would have powers to com
bat discriminatien in employment
because of race, color or creed. :
The FEPC is favored in the poll
, tical platforms of both the demo
cratic -and republican parties, but
southern senators always have suc
ceeded in killing it through pro
longed debate.
Lucas said he plans to wait un
til the week after next before seek
; ing to limit debate on' FEPC. The
: real FEPC test is expected on the
debate limiting motion, which re
quired approval of 64 senators. 1

for individuals vary by age. sex
and type of activity. But they range
from a few hundred for infants to
upwards ot.4.000 for men engaged
in heavy activity.
For example, the average farm
er's wife is said to need about
2,600 calories a day; the average
city housewife about 2,300 calories;
the average active farmer from 3,
500 to 4,000; a sedentary man about
2,400; and the average nursing
mother 3,000.
The department Itself made, no
official comment as to whether
Americans over-eat on the aver
age. But its nutritional authorities
said there Is a question whether
the average dally consumption
eed be at the indicated level, of
3250, taking into account the low
er needs of children and women.
e energy value of the 1950
diet fa 130 calories less than the
peak of 3.350 in 1946, but the same
as the average for the 1935-39 pre
war period. 1 '' - ' '
Today's diet Is of a higher qual
ity, however, than the prewar.
Americans are eating more meat
and poultry products and less
starchy foods, such as potatoes, dry
beans, grain products and sugar.

Under Wraps
SEATTLE, May MVThe Rob
ert Johnsons just weren t getting
along. She wanted a divorce. He
didn't want a divorce. ;
As Traffic Investigator . Arthur
Dravetto got the story, Johnson, a
Boeing airplane company engineer,
trussed up his wife, Betty, 21, and
tossed her in the family automobile
this morning. He vowed as how he
would take her back to Osakis,
Minn., their former home, and end
this divorce nonsense. He also took
along their 18-month-old son, Rus
sell, who was not tied up.
Rounding a turn, the securely
tied Mrs. Johnson fell' against her
husband. He lost control of the car
and rammed a parked car.
I untied her right away," he
told Traffic Investigator Arthur
Dravetto, "and called an ambul
ance. 1 did right, didn't I?w
-1 don't know," Dravetto said.
"I don't think I could get away
with tying up my wife."
"I meant untying her, Johnson
said. - . , 'iv;;
1 Mrs. Johnson was not badly hurt
She offered to bail her husband
out of Jail, where he's held for

"Might even move back to Min
