SAN FRANCISCO, April 4-GT)-"
Baseball's new rule on balks has a
'few of the folks who score Pacific
Coast league baseball games some
what embarrassed, 1
The league's first week of play
23 games has ended but nobody
agrees on the number of times
pitchers have committed infrac
tions of the requirement that they
stop for a full second before de
livering the ball. ,
On the other hand, they prob
ably agree very definitely that the
number of the infractions this sea
son has been astounding, and that
all hands are going to have to
watch closely from now on to be
right
The statistician of "a newsnaDer
here counted 49 balks last week.
That's 31 more than the PCL av
erage for the entire season during
the past 10 years.
In Los Angeles, League Presi
' dent ' Clarence Rowland said the
box scores showed 21 balks called
last week. Even that figure is just
even below the all-time season
high, committed in 1946.
And the circuit'! statistician,
vviuiam weiss. wno naan i rp-ivri
the official boxes yet, said he'd
tabulated 44 balks in reading news
paper accounts of the games.

OREGON STATE COLLEGE,
April 4- ( Special ) -Willamette uni
versity s Bearcats took full advan
tage of costly Oregon State errors
today to down the Beavers 6-5 in
the first game of the season for
Coach Johnny Lewis' Salem team.
The Bearcats managed only five
hits off Ed Stoltz and Ken -Carpen
ter, while the Beavers biffed 10
off Lou Scrivens, Claude Nordhill,
Gordy Lenz and Ray Pointer. But
four OSC errors proved the balan
cer. ; - jj .
Irv Roth was the batting star
for Willamette with three of the
five hits,' one a two-run double in
the fifth frame. Both Darrell Nel
son and Ed Ferrell had two hits
for the Beavers. Roth, a catcher,
played centerfield and checked in
a bright defensive game also, mak
ing one great catch as he hit the
fence.
Willamette's first two runs in
the opening" inning came on an
error, a double by Dave Perlman
an infield tap and George Matile's
single. Two walks and an error set
it up for Roth's smack in the fifth.
A hit batter, a walk and another
error brought across WU's sixth
tally in the seventh frame.
Oregon State tallied twice in the
first heat on three hits I off Lou
Scrivens and twice more in the
fourth on four bingles. Willamette
next plays Oregon at Eugene Fri
day in an. afternoon doubleheader
