Only 359 of 2,315 practical

his right leg incurred when a tim

was fined $50 in. municipal court
Thursday and his drivers license
suspended for 30 days after plead
ing guilty to i charge of failure
to remain at me scene oi an aca
dent
Schmitz was arrested by state
police and turned over to city
officials after he had been identi
fied as driver of the car which
smashed into an auto owned by
Charles Massey, Willamette uni
versity student Tuesday night In
the chase that followed the acci
dent the car operated by Schmitz
overturned near Four Corners.

Burglarized
City detectives were Investigat
Ing the burglary of the First Evan
gelical church. Summer and Mar
ion streets, Thursday.
Detectives reported that the
church had been entered by slip
ping the lock on an outside door.
The kitchen was broken into, the
pastor's office ransacked, but ap
parently nothing was taken, they
said.
The burglary was discovered
Thursday morning by the Rev.
W. N. Brown, pastor of the church,
who said it must have occurred
sometime after 1020 pjn. Wed

Marion county chapter officials
in the -American Red Cross said
Thursday their fund campaign
will continue until all divisions
and communities complete solici
tation. Officially designated campaign
period ends today. About three
fourths of the $42,000 goal in
Marion county, has been realized.

from downtown Court street to
the regular chapter offices on
North Liberty street Saturday,
with Mrs. Elsie Hoi man in charge.
The women's division of the
drive yesterday reported encour
agingly on its present telephone
solicitation to reach families

day on the Salem hospital de
velopment program funds cam
paign committee told fellow com
mittee members that the need for
additional hospital facilities is
"critical.-
Nelson, who was retired as a
marine aviation colonel in 1947,
will serve without pay in spear
heading the reactivated drive to
bring subscriptions to $1,100,000
this summer.
He is a graduate of the Uni
versity of Oregon and joined the
marine corps in 1930. During the
late war he served in Hawaii,
Solomons, Philippines and Oki
nawa. He was later a. special ad
visor to the state board of aero
nautics. Nelson, who recently complet
ed a study of hospital conditions
in Salem, said "I am appalled by
the situation, particularly by con
ditions at Salem General hos
pital where it has been necessarjf'jf
to place patients in the halls In II
