Grains Show Weakness at Session Close CHICAGO, Feb. 6 -Jf) Grains showed weakness at the start and strength at the close today. Final prices recorded fair-sized gains over those of Saturday. Commission house liquidation hit the market at the start, prices fal ling a couple of cents in some con tracts. All rye deliveries made new lows. Heavy turnover fea tured this initial drop, but volume dried up and the market began a creeping, timid advance. In the last 15 minutes the bul lish forces lost all their timidity, definitely putting the Bears on the run. Prices rose quickly, particu larly in the March contracts. Short-covering helped the ad vance. Wheat ended lH-2 higher, corn was -l higher, oats were - higher, rye was Vs. to 1 cent higher, soybeans were to 2 cents higher and lard was 3 to 5 cents a hundred pounds higher. There was no specific news to account for the early morning selloff, beyond that which opera ted against prices last week. Ap parently some additional Bulls had become discouraged and had de cided to get out of the market But traders were impressed by the fact that liquidation did not gather momentum. While the creeping advance started soon after the first hour, and in the opinion of traders was largely a technical move, it was helped along later by announce ment that the Economic Coopera tion administration had granted $9,300,000 to west Germany for the purchase of America wheat Also attracting ' attention was the news that the Commodity Credit corporation had purchased 1,700,000 bushels of wheat late last week, all at Portland, Oregon. This was more than the CCC has been regularly buying. Some traders have felt the government afency would step up its buying cam paign If prices' began a drastic slide. Enthusiasm Slows, Stock Prices Drop NEW YORK, Feb. 8 -UP)- Mo mentary buying enthusiasm com ing with presidential action In the coal strike failed to carry through in the stock market today, and prices backed down. Trading was a curious mixture of general caution and preference for a few selected Issues.. For nearly half of the session, prices drifted down slowly in quiet trading. Just after Presi dent Truman invoked the Taft Hartley law to boost coal product ion, prices perked up. But there was no marked volume of trading evident on the rise. In the final hour most stocks sold under their best prices. Gains and losses spread over a range of about a point in either direction, but the number of is sues on the downside had a sHght edge. Steels and motors were among the most active of the major groups and gradually worked mostly higher. . The Associated Press average of 60 stocks lost .3 of a point with the Industrial and rail components down a like amount and the util ities off .1 of a point Of the 1,109 individual Issues traded, 343 advanced and 474 de clined. There were 54 new highs for 1949-50 reached during the day, including U. S. Steel and General Motors. Only one new low was touched. The volume of trading was 1, 490,000 shares compared with 2,210,000 Friday when the market advanced to a new 3 -year, high.
