14 Tte State-mcm , Salem. Oregon. Thnrtdrrf, Jcmnarr 1850 Wheat Down, Corn Up in CHICAGO, Jin. 25-aVFIrmnes In corn and easiness in wheat fea tured dealings on the board of trade today. Other grains held bout steady. The contrasting trends In wheat and corn showed up right at the tart and carried through to the close. There was one period in mid-morning when the whole mar ket weakened, carrying corn along with It, but prices rebounded from that sell-off. Wheat ended Vi-IH lower, corn was y4- higher, oats were lower to higher, rye was un changed to Vt lower, soybeans were V lower "-to V higher and lard was 10 to 20 cents a hundred pounds lower. Snow In wide areas of Nebraska and Kansas, which should be of help to the new crop, weakened July and September bread cereal deliveries. But even the March con tract eased, despite trade reports that the United Kingdom had tak en a cargo of wheat and Mexico had bought 1,250,000 bushels. Although the western part of Kansas has been dry since Oct 10, the weather bureau said, "general ly in a dry fall the most important f actoftoward a wheat crop in this area is getting the wheat up. That has been accomplished and wheat roots extend into moist subsoil." Multiple dam projects along lines somewhat similar to the Tennessee Valley Authority have been started or planned in Af ghanistan, Australia, Brazil, Cey ! Ion, India, Mexico, Norway, Por tugal and Yugoslavia. caxx for BIDS County of Marion, Stat of Oregon, fs asking tor sealed bids for trading, gravelling, providing drainage, and surfacing with 9 11 penetration asphalt 18' wide on Neef Avenue located In Neef Sub-Division in Marion County, Oregon. , Plans and specification! may be ob tained at the office of the County .Engineer, Courthouse. Jan. 25-flVTh stock market pulled through a short but intense selling cloud burst with only moderate damage today. Losses of fractions to more than a point most of them less than a point were tnickiy spnniuea through the list at the closing belL At the worst, though, leading stocks had dropped an extreme of around 4 points and casualties of 1 to 2 points were numerous. Trading expanded amply when Quotations were sliding. Turnover stepped up to 1,700,000 shares, largest In a week, from lso.ooo Tuesday. General uneasiness over dwindl ing coal supplies, plus the Chry sler strike, were blamed mainly for the upset. The storm of selling passed as quickly as it had appeared and a good handful of stocks managed to emerge with minor gains. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks dropped .6 of one point to 72.2. The industrial group scor ed the largest decline, followed by rails and utilities in that order. Trading broadened to include 1, 158 individual issues, tops since Jan. 13, of which 704 were marked down and 220 advancea.
