Major Grains
Hold Steady in
Quiet Session
CHICAGO, Jan. 20 -(JP)- While
major grains held steady in quiet
dealings, weakness cropped up in
soybeans and rye on the board o:
trade today. Both sold off on a
general liquidating movement to
ward the close.
In wheat, corn and oats trends
were highly confused. Prices
swung up and down rather easily
on small volume. These cireals
never developed a definite trend
and ended with prices scrambled.
Wheat ended y lower to y
higher, corn was Vi lower to V2
higher, oats were Vs lower to
higher, rye was 1 to 2 cents low
er, soybeans were i-3 lower and
lard was unchanged to 10 cents a
hundred pounds higher.
Selling in wheat came mainly
from commission houses and local
traders. Hedging was very light.
Export houses gave the market a
little support, lifting hedges
against a sale of two cargoes of
wheat to Holland and one to Great
Britain.
Weather warmed up in the win
ter wheat area, although very, little
moisture was received. One an
alyst said buying wheat on a mid
winter crop scare had proven ex
pensive to bulls in prior years.
Stock Market
Makes Fresh
Price Gains
NEW YORK, Jon. 20 -WV.A
rallying stock market made fresn
progress today despite the losses
taken in an afternoon decline.
A good day's business was done.
The trading tempo hit a faster
pace when prices advanced and
slowed on the declines. Turnover
of 1,440,000 shares compared with
1,170,000 Thursday.
Prices moved up, usually in
halting fashion; through the mom
ing. In the afternoon buyers were
considerably less energetic and
quotations started a slow down
ward march. Gains were either
chopped down a bit or even con-
fverted into losses with the major
exception of packing house stocks
The Assoicated Press average of
60 stocks advanced 2 of one point
to 73. The rail section made the
best showing, mainly because of
gains scored by Santa Fe and
Nickel Plate. Industrials and utili
ties, on average, improved slight
ly.
The market was a bit broader
than yesterday with 1,110 indivi
dual stocks bought and sold. Of
these 459 showed gains and 368
were marked down.
