In Lions Talk
A farm program like the Bran
nan plan would preserve family
type farming and stabilize this
nation's agricultural economy, Sa
lem Lions club was told Thursday
by Lyle Thomas, state secretary
of the Oregon Farmers union and
a state representative from Polk
county.
Absence of a government farm
program would lead to industrial
type farming controlled by a few
individuals, .Thomas averred at
the club luncheon, in the Marlon
hotel. And even the present farm
supports by the government are
not much better, the speaker In
dicated. Under a Brannan plan, said
Thomas, all farm products would
be considered basic commodities,
not just the vote-getting few like
tobacco, peanuts, wheat, corn, rice
and cotton. Subsidies would be In
the form of direct payments to
farmers, not the purchase and
removal from market of surpluses
from bumper crops, he added.
Thomas called his listeners' at
tention to tariffs and other gov
ernment measures which aid in
dustry. "Farm economy is declin
ing while industrial economy con
tinues on the uptrend," he said.
"We must recognize the differ
ence between these economies and
the need for an effective farm
program."
5-Day Course
In Firemansliip
Starts Monday
A five-day course In specialized
firemanship will start Monday at
Salem's central fire station. About
30 officers and acting officers of
the Salem department will attend.
Instructors will include mem
bers of the state fire marshal's
office, top officers of the Portland
and Salem departments, and state
police.
Courses will Include arson de
tection, inspection tours, training
men, handling men and command
ing a company.
Fire Chief W. P. Roble and Bat
talion Chiefs Ellsworth Smith and
Robert Mills are members of the
Salem department who will con
duct classes.

In Washington
Services for Roscoe H. Wilson,
60, a former Salem resident, were
held Wednesday at Orting, Wash.
Wilson, a World War I veteran,
died Sunday at Madigan veterans
hospital. Ft Lewis, Wash. Inter
ment was In Washington Soldiers
Home cemetery at Orting with the
American Legion in charge of
military services.
Surviving are a brother, Austin
H. Wilson of Salem; and four sis
ters, Mrs. Mattie Hinkle of Salem,
Mrs. William Schaffer of San
Francisco, Mrs. Jessie Taylor of
Olympia, Wash., and Mrs. Esther
Weihrdt of Oakville, Wash.
