Oscar Is dead of broken heart
The baby seal, nursed from
death's door to health by 30 days
of care and affection from its
finder's family, diedV in Stanley
park.
. It has broken eight-year-old
Jimmy MacNeil's heart, too.
Jimmy found 0car half dead
in Burrard Inlet last month and
.nursed him. And it was Jimmy
who generously consented to al
low Oscar to go to the park board
so that other Jimmies could enjoy
Oscar's company.
That was 10 days ago.
Today Jimmy's father, Norman
MacNeil, is angry.
They should have told me
Oscar was sick," said Mr. Mac
NeiL "They've lost every real they
ever had. Oscar was healthy and
fine when we turned him over.

Island Mice

barren rock north of Vancouver
Island has yielded naturalists two
new species of mice and an un
solved riddle.
On tiny, uninhabited Triangle
island, in the stormy seas sweep
ing in from the North Pacific, Van
couver explorers captured the
mice, previously unknown to zo
ologists. The small animals are white
footed, about the size of the ordi
nary field mouse. They nest in the
crevices of the granite-bound is
land and feed on its scant vegeta
tion. Naturalist Frank Beebe of Van
couver's Stanley Park Zoo said the
mice are being classified and nam
ed. Only one fact is missing.
How did the mice get to the
Triangle island? i
I The rock is miles from the near
est land. Only sea birds are found
there and then just during the
nesting season. Chances of the
mice having been carried there by
tien are too remote to be consid
ered. "Another of nature's unsolved
riddles," said Naturalist Beebe.
