An agent for the U. S. Bureau of
Narcotics says that the number of
drug addicts in the United States
is steadily declining,
M. R. Cotlegeman. who has
charge of the Utah-Wyoming area,
spoke recently before the Salt
Lake Round Table.
He said:
The old addicts are dying off
and there are-fewer younger peo
ple using drugs. By the time an
addict reaches 50, he usually has
contracted a serious disease that
kills him."
CoIIegeman said World War II
caused fewer people to turn to
drugs than any other war in his
tory. "In World War I," he said,
"about one person out of every
3,000 became drug addicts. One
out of every 100,000 is the figure
for World War II."

traders put their money on peace
in the steel industry today.
In the face of almost over
whelming indications that a strike
scheduled for Friday midnight
will be carried out, the market
closed within a shade of the year's
top mark.
Final prices were below the
highs of the day in many xases
but still up fractions to around
a point.
A mid-morning buying drive,
powered by the railroad section,
lifted key issues fractions to
around 2 points. Advances were
pretty well maintained for sev
eral hours, then late in the ses
sion selling became a little more
insistent and the widest gains
were clipped.
Business picked up speed when
the market was climbing, tended
to contract on the way down.
Turnover of 1,380,000 shares was
above 1,000,000 shares for the 13th
session in a row and compared
with 1,300,000 Wednesday.
. The Associated Press average
of 60 stocks advanced .3 of one
point to 65J. This matched the
high point of a summer rally irst
touched Sept. 13 and was tops
since the high of the year of 66.2
was established on January 22.

of erratic price fluctuations wound
up on the board of trade today
with prices thoroughly scrambled.
December wheat lost more than
a cent while all other deliveries
scored fairly substantial gains. Re
ports of increased offerings of cash
wheat at leading cash markets had
an influence on the weakness of
December. There was a good deal
of selling in this contract against
purchases of May
Wheat closed ltt lower to IV4
higher, corn was unchanged to Vk
lower, oats were Va-M lower, rye
was lower to V4 higher, soy
beans were Vt to 1 cent higher,
and lard was S cents lower to 5
cents a hundred pounds higher.

Form of Oaths
NEW DELHI-OSVProvisions on
forms of oath were decided after
a lively debate in the constituent
assembly here. The form proposed
in the draft constitution read as
this: "I, A.B.C., do solemnly af
firm (or swear by God)."
Sardar Bhupendra Singh Mann,
a Sikh member, said; that in a
secular state : one should not be
asked to swear in the name of
God. Two Hindu members, H. V.
Kamath and M. Tyagi, wanted to
reverse the formula and bring
the words "swear by God" first,
and the affirmation later. They
said: India first gave the idea
of God to the world. God belongs
to India and India is a land of
God. Therefore God must come
first,,
The house adopted the Kamath
Tyagi amendment. The new
clause read: "I, A.B.C., swear in
the name of God (or solemnly
affirm)-.
