People are just scared of their size. It's the little ones that are yappiest and which will chase you. "Ninety perc ent of the dogs I've met are friendly; the others are the reserved type, not neces sarily mean, but stand-offish. First thing I do when I meet a new dog is whistle and talk to him in a friendly voice. The thing to do Is be friendly, but don't push it "If you're riding a bicycle, re member it's the bike the dog is barking at Getoff and walk until the animal gets to know you. So many people have evinced Interest In the artist that the following story was obtained from him.) By Jimmy Hatlo CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. There are times, in drawing "They'll Do It Every Time," I feel as if I am running a lonely hearts club. For example, I get a letter form Joe Doakes wanting me to do a cartoon needling the guy in my office who's always borrowing dough. I do it, and the next week I et flood of letters beginning: "Dear Mr. Hatlo: Will you please forward the enclosed note to Joe Doakes?" The note says some thing like, "Joe you hit the nail on the head. Why, there's a lug in MY office who . . ." . The next thing you know, there is a hard and fast friendship and I'm the little master of ceremon ies who brought them together. -The Hatlo story began In Provi dence, R.I., in- 1898. My4 family moved to California a year later, however, so I feel pretty free to call myself a Californian. I went to school in Los Angeles and hey tell me I had some promise as an artist, but somehow I didn't get into the business at first. I drifted into advertising and I got mixed The Otto J. Wilton Co. But I guess the urge to draw was pretty strong. I found myself giving a sales talk; to the Call's sports editor about one of my car toons, and the next thing, there I was doing editorial! and; political cartoons. My big break came when the Call Bulletin asked me to do a sports page panel to replace that drawn by the late, great T. A. "Tad" Dorgan. It developed ulti mately into "They'll Do It Every a; w Jimmy and Eleanor Halle display Bo-Bo and family. T, lme," which King Features Syn dicate picked up to syndicate na tionally. 1 married Eleanor Dollard In 1937 after we met! when one of my drawings was auctioned off at an Ad club football dinner in San Francisco and she bought it. We live in Carmel-by-the-Sea in Cal ifornia. Eight months ago we were blessed with a son who I hope will grow up to be something else than a cartoonist. X I get a lot bigger kick out of drawing comics than I did doing political cartoons, and sometimes I feel that they expound my phil osophies more effectively and reach a lot more people. I'd soon er draw than walk, anyway, and I hope I always can continue to draw funny pictures. X Engineer Wins Pulp, Paper Industry Award PORTLAND, Sept, 15 -Wh Vance L.
