Orient's Wheat Market Subject Of New Survey A proposal by the Oregon wheat commission, to study the potential Oriental market for Pacific north west wheat, has been accepted by the IT.S. department of agricul ture under the research and mar keting act, the commission re ported here Wednesday. Administrator E. J. Bell told the commission that personnel de tails i remain to be worked out after which a milling expert and probably another specialist will be sent abroasd to conduct an on-the-spot study of marketing and processing conditions in Japan, India, the Philippines and other regions in the far east. Commission members said they were enthusiastic over the long time possibilities of the study of the j almost limitless potential Oriental markets. Much wheat is already being shipped- to Japan by the government and to some other areas, they said. It was felt that definite information is need ed as to how the wheat may be processed and put into consum ers' hands to meet most nearly their dietary customs and tastes. Richard Baum, wheat market ing analyst for the commission, reported on his studies on in dustrial outlets for Pacific north west wheat in the manufacture of starch, glucose, glutamic acid,,food flavoring and other prodWts. Baum said many industrial users feel that, since most of the pre sent information and data in this field was obtained before and during the war, new research is in order to comply with post war conditions. Baum was authorized to go east to confer with research leaders of outstanding firms preparatory to compiling a report for distribu tion at the December meeting of the commission."
