Painful Home Run
1 v i I . " I- . .
- By Al Lightner
The home! run with the bases
loaded, an all-conquering clout,
is the latest thing to Join the
seemingly endless -reasons why
the town Senators can't win 'of
losing. Three of - the: four-run
smashes (yes, three!) exploded in
the locals' faces last night at
Waters field in the doubleheader
with Vancouver, and they amount
ed to 12-6 and 9-5 victories over
the locals for the Caps.
And to those who resented the
Dick Sinovic sale to Vancouver,
one of the smacks will be good
news. For Sinovic himself sent
one from the premises, in the
second game, to help ruin Lefty
Cal Mclrvin; Catcher Bud Sheely
was the other culprit, and in both
games. He bashed one off Jimmy
Foster in the first game and then
repeated off McIrvin in the sec
ond. Altogether the . 12 runs
brought across by the clouts
amounted to over half ,the total
the second-placers got in sweep
ing the twin bilL Also, the trio
notched a new record tor the lo
cal arena, and perhaps for the
entire league.
Jim Olsen, sore back and all,
tackled the Caps n the opeijer.
But Jim's long layoff, plus his ail
ment couldn't stand up under the
barrage and he was succeeded in
turn by Foster, Bill Osborn and
Stu Fredericks. Sinovic had two
hits, both bloopsf in the first game
and two runs batted in. The big
gun was Sheely who not only
spanked his four-run homer, but
three other hits as well to pocket
six RBI's in-all for the game, Van
couver cracked out 17 bingles in
the opener to give Long Bob Cos
tello all the support he needed.
The fence-clearing- swats by
Sheely and Sinovic weren't the
only ones of the night. In the final
frame of the' opener Mel Wasley
sent his 18th of the season out pi
the yard, with .Bill Burgher on
base, the eighth hit off Costelio
for the struggle. And although he
didn't ioin the homer-hitters, Ray
Tran of the visitors collected four
hits in the opener.
Mclrvin was sailing along in
great shape in his southpaw duel
with Jim Hedgecock in the night
cap until Sinovic came up in the
third with the sacks jammed. He
pickled a fast fall on a line far
over t,he distant left-center wall.
Salem rose up to tie tne couni
at 4-4 in the third, but alter ine
Caps weht ahead 5-4, in the fifth,
Sheely slapped his second grand
slammer out of the park in the
seventh to end everything. The
Senators managed one more run
in the eighth, mostly as a result of
three walks by Hedgecock.
The Vancouver lefty was swift
as all get out in nis. sum, nu
so was Mclrvin for that matter.
Leftv: Cal. who deserves much
better than a 9-5 setback, made
only the two bad. pitches hat
killed off his chances for a win.
The clubs go at it again in a
single game tonight at etgni
o'clock, but you won't fyid Bud
Peterson playing shortstop for the
locals. Bud was jerked from the
lineup in i the first: game ind
handed an indefinite .suspension
"for .'indifferent performance" by
Business Manager George Emigh.
What with Bob Hedington on the
injured list, the decking of Peter
son means that Manager Bill
Beard must play third base. Mel
Wasley second and Wayne Peter
son short, as they did last night.
Although the locals lose a po
tential star in Peterson if he'd
only try all the way they
looked as if they harvested one
in the double bill last night.
Claude Buckley, the OCE rookie
looked great both afield and at
bat and hiked his batting average
to the .300 mark. . . . Only 516
naid watched the games, and most
of them spent their time tiding
the Salems; without saddles. . . .
That and laughing .at Costelio
trying to hit.' He's the worst bat
ter in organized baseball, or close

had 76-76 152 and Painter's
card read 73-79 152.

In a Legion long-driving contest
Bob Burrell of Salem took honors
with a 266-yard smash and another
novelty "closest - to - the -pin
competition on No. 8 saw
Kimmell win as he dropped his
ball five feet away.
Cline and the runnerups and
third-placers will be presented
with trophies at the glof club this
morning. .
Turn-out for -the links action
fell far under expectations, but re
sponse to the bowling tournament
occasioned even greater surprise.
Through last night only two Le

ney. They were Jack Rushlow and
Frank Peterson of Hillsboro. The
pair rolled a 1202 doubles score
(with handicap) and Peterson
chalked a respectable 629 in
singles. There may be a last
minute rush to Capitol Alleys and
