But if this 1949 Statesman Photo contest had lasted just one week long er, they might not have been. The grand prize winners Gardner Knapp of 1525 Cheme keta St.; rhil-Wtmer. 487 N. 18th st.t and Mrs. E. C. Russell, 1635 State it. To each of them goes a $20 check and, of course, congratu lations., Their photos as publish ed on this page are outstand ing. In fact, the entries through out the contest were outstand ing. The judges had no easy job. One interesting fact was dis- Legion Warns Oh Solicitors A warning that unauthorized olicitors will try to take advan tage of the public and Salem mer chants during the American Le gion, convention next week was is sued Saturday from convention headquarters. General Chairman John Ker rick asked that everyone ' ap proached by solicitors demand proper credentials. All authorized j salesmen will carry prooer iden tification issued by Executive Secretary Onas Olson, he said. Information can be secured by telephoning convention head quarters, 2r3917, or inquiring at the tent which will be in use Mon day on the courthouse lawn. Kerrick also reminded the pub lic they may register for the con vention and receive the program, badge and courtesy cards on pay ment of fee. Registrations are be ing made at the Senator hotel. covered several hours after the final decisions had been reached on the grand prizes (after three arbitrators "were called in, and after, in one instance, the judges were completely reversed in their own verdict. That fact: All three grand prize winners were the winners in the contest's fourth week. The reversal came in the por trait - character study category where pictures by Mrs. Russell, Ted Stook and Dr. Henry Mor ris were under final considera tion. Mrs. Russell's entry final ly came out on top. No coin was flipped, but' there was a temp tation to do just that. The pictorial - scenery clas sification was the next most troublesome, with a ML Hood show picture by Paul Almquist of Silverton a close runner-up to Knapp's winning photo of a church in the Tetons. And not by any means were those problems the only ones. To say which pictures were con sidered for the grand awards would mean mentioning every one of the 18 prize winners in the regular contest - so that's what well do: A. A. Taylor (2), Ted Stook (2), Paul Almquist (2), Phil Wi nner (2), Minnie Baker, Mrs. Paul S. Wolfe, C. G. Warden, A. G. Lewis. Dr. Henry Morris, Mrs. E. C. RusselL Gardner Knapp, W. J. Guthrie, Mrs. G. B. Hauge and E. J. Pedersen. To every one of them goes high honor for their entries and regret that all could not have received the grand awards. The Statesman Photo depart ment has been proud of the pri vilege of using such pictures. And it has also been deeply in terested in the other hundreds of entries which did not take a first prize. Some of them came very, very near to it, and by far the greater majority were a real credit to photography. To them, and to the winners, our bow! Pope Jinathematized' Third of Humanity, Russ Paper Claims By Eddy Gilmore MOSCOW, July 3Mif)-Pravda said today Pope Pius XII has "anath ematized, about one-third of humanity" in his move to draw a sharp line between Catholicism and communism. "According to the exact meaning of the Vatican's order the communist party newspaper said, "70,000,000 members of trade unions' in the (communist-led) world federation of labor and 600,000,000 per sons whose delegates met with : communists in the (Pans) world congress of peace proponents are subjeclfTaexcommunication. "Moreover7- excommunication threatens every citizen of any country whose government con tains communists, for carrying out the instructions; of that govern ment." f (Anathematized means cursed or falling under a ban.) (Roman Catholics who are mili tant communists were the primary targets of the Vatican decree). Pravda declared: "The open action of the Pope on the side of the camp of war and reaction will not add strength to that camp. The crusade against communism, agairist democracy, announced by Pope Pius XII only exposes the Vatican, a & the agency of imperialist reaction, as an In strument of the warmongers. . it is doomed to inevitable failure,' 6i 59 Sayi U fi III UAL I T Y STORAGE PACE LACKING , ASTORIA, July 30 -4JP)- The North Pacific grain growers assoc iation protested today that there would not be enough storage space here for grain coming for export. N. to Reinforce Spy System WASHINGTON, July 30-(P)-Testimony of a self-described for mer communist that Russia has used the United Nations to "reinforce" her spies in this country was made public tonight by a senate judiciary subcommittee. The statement was made by Mrs. Ruth Fischer of New York City, a sister of Gerhart Eisler, the communist leader who jumped bond and skipped the country after being convicted of passport fraud. She said that soviet intelligence agents are hidden in the various Russian diplomatic, trade and other delegations that come to this country. Ostensibly, she said, they ara as signed to some routine function but their "real job is to report on various phases of American so ciety to Moscow headquarters." "Recently this corps has been reinfciced by the UN delegations of Russia and her satellites," Mrs. Fischer said. She also testified that a French woman whom she described as "highly dangerous" had gained ad mittance to the United States "be cause her organization was rego gnized by Trygve Lie" secretary general of the United Nations. Mrs. Fischer identified the French woman to whom she refer red as Marie-Claude Vaillant-Cou-turier, general secretary of the wo men's international democratic federation, with headquarters in Parist The organization is "the princi pal Stalinist front in the women's ernmental organizations. The pre sident of the council and repre sentatives of China, France, Great Britain, The United States and Russia make up the committee, which recommends to the council whether or not the organization should be granted consultative sta tus.
