Hogs Alone
Take Meat
Price Jump
By Lillian L. Madsen
Farm Editor, The Statesman
Hogs are the only meat animals
for which prices increased in Late
May and June, according to the
livestock review released by the
USDA Friday.
The national average price of
sheep and lambs reached the peak
in April and the high price this
season for wool was reached in
February. "Since then the average
price has gradually worked lower.
Prices at mid-June were lower
than a year ago, although sheep,
lamb and wool prices had not de
clined as much as other meat ani
mals. Sheep prices for the na
tion are down 3 per cent compared
to a year ago; lamp and wool
prices, down about two per cent.
Cattle Rrices ended the May
June period practically unchang
ed, while veal calves dropped
slightly in price. All livestock
prices are down from a year ago
with hog prices, which increased a
little again this spring, having de
clined the most ( 18 per cent) dur
ing the 12-month period. Cattle
prices dropped 14 per cent and
veal calves, seven per cent
During this same period, farm
costs have dropped around ZVz per
cent as measured by the U. S.
parity figures. With livestock prices
dropping more than farm costs,
purchasing . power .of farmers is
down compared to a year ;go. Dol
lars received from sale of hogs
would purchase for the farmer
16 per cent compared to a year ago;
from cattle 12 per cent less and
from veal calves five per cent less.
With the average price of sheep,
lambs and wool declining about
as much as farm costs, the sheep
farmer has about the same buy
ing power as a year ago.
