ATHLETIC PARK. Wenatchee.
; May 7 - (Special ) -The Salem Sen
ators and Wenatrhee Chiefs broke
even in their "Apple Festival"
douSheader here Saturday. Sa
lem won the first game in a walk,
12-5. on Ray McNiilty's pitching
and some home run hitting by
Bud Peiersan. But "Wenatch(
won the second, 9-8, in a game
that had the Saierm screaming
load and long at its end.
The four game series was split
even, two games each: There will
j be no game for Salem Sunday,
as they played doubleheaders here
both Friday and Saturday. Sa
lem's next game is at Victoria
Monday night.
Peterson drove in three runs in
the first game with his two hom
ers off Cy Greenlaw, veteran WIL
Roundsman. Mel Wasley. with
three hits also drove in three runs.
Manager Bill Beard mashed out
three hits too. McNuIty fanned
four and walked four in notching
his first win of the season.
Wenatchee was off fi a -S lead
in the sixth inning of the night
cap, after knocking out Salem
starter Bill Osborn in the fourth
frame. Osborn was wild. He start
ed off by walking the first two
batters and serving up a home
run pitch to Hal Rhyne. Gene Pe
terson finished up for the Sena
tors creditably, and it was his
two-run triple in the Salem eighth
that helped spark a four-run rally.
Beard and Jim Wert had hit be
fore Peterson bopped hsi triple.
But it was in the Salem ninth
that the fireworks broke out Lar
ry Orteig singled. Bob Cherry
doubled and Beard drove in Or
teig with a single. Only one was
out. Then Jim Olson pinch hit
for Al Spaeter and grounded to
Vince Parego at second. As Cher
ry was crossing the plate with the
tying run. Beard slid into Short
stop Meyers to break up the pos
sible Wenatchee double play. He
dumped Meyers effectively, all
right, but Umpire Tim MrCul
lough then railed Beard out also
for interference, retiring -the side
and nullifying Cherry's run.
The Senators were still arguing
when th lighta went out.
