but . . We're not toe sure where the poor
it. ethers ccrr.e in. Saturday the horses end
riders paraded, publicizing the show for last
niht and today, and the boy scouts followed
alcnj later in the day in a prologue to the
Scout Circus. We did think, however, that so
many motherly looking women were storm
ing the shops Scturday. that there just could
n't be very many remaining home waiting
to be honored.
Furthermore ... though cur suggestion for
a national Aunt's day has never kicked up a
furor arong the florists, greeting card people
or gift manufacturers, we still think they are
missing a good bet Nevertheless we always,
think that there ere many advanatges to be
ing an aunt over being a parent you can
always love 'em and leave 'em (with no
baby sitting problems to rum your hair to
silver).
Hard to get ... There' nothing to spend
ing a lot of money hiring a landscape ar
chitect and a gardener to whip you up a
lovely shcwplace for people to drive by and
itare at. But it takes talent to develop a small
garden with a minimum cf expense and a
maximum of labor. Next time ycu're out icr
a drive, go through some of the less expen
sive parts of the city, you'll be surprised at
the pretty places you find. Having a deep
feeling for Salem as we used to know it, we
like to drive along the waterfront from Cen
ter street north to Division. We're always
surprised at the interesting places along Wa
ter street, and marvel at hew many are well
kept If you are like us. you'll feel a pang
of regret that the great beautiful maples
there are among the only ones surviving
what used to be a beautiful city cf trees and
is now a "bustling industrial town whose
population is. increasing by leaps and
bounds" as if that was the criterion cf a city
of happy people.
Take a glance ... at the lavishly flower
ing (what locks to be) labutnum you see as
you look down half under the bridge ap
proach at the foot of Center street. There's
a full blooming old fashioned clematis which
must have covered the side cf the house fcr
years ... Maxine Buren
