WU, Linfield
Divide Pair
Willamette's Bearcat baseballers
opened their Northwest Confer
ence campaign on Bush field Fri
day by splitting a wild, basehit
fllled twin-bill with Llnfield's
Wildcats. Johnny Lewis' locals
snatched the initial tilt, 13-10, with
the aid of a 11-hit attack and the
Linfieldi came back to easily grab
the nightcap, 15-1, as John Nau
man set the WU's down with four
blows.
A four-run explosion in the
eighth grame gave the Bearcats
the opener. That winning rally was
manufactured on a two-run homer
to left center by Bud Brouwer and
a double by Andy Harrington
scoring Cordy Lenz, who had
walked and George Matllo who
had singled.
Linfield had previously gone
ahead in the seventh with a six
run binge which routed WU Start
er Lou Scrivens. The McMinn
ville gang banged five hits in that
surge and was aided by three
walks.
Willamette's biggest inning was
the sixth when five tallies were
pushed over the platter. Feature
of that offensive was a circuit wal
lop by Matile with none aboard.
Linfield was guilty of eight errors
over the route.
The Wildcats put the second
game away by pounding IS hits off
five assorted Willamette hurlers
while Nauman was thoroughly
muzzling the locals' bats. Outfield
er Joe Marchand of the visitors
blasted two homers and a triple
good, for seven runs. Linfield col
lected seven runs inside the first
three innings, sending the Bear
cats' starting hillsman, Johnny
Slanchik, to the showers. Slanchik
batted in the only WU marker in
the second frame with a single.
Willamette goes to Monmouth
today to meet OCE. Larry Stocks
is slated to start for the Lewis
club.
