Many different types of treat
ment have been employed for
'Ah.it is known as peptic ulcer,
that L- ulcer of the first part of
the intestines or duodenum. Ju.t
why these ulcers occur has not
been definitely detei mined. It is
thought, however, that they tend
to develop in those with certain
types of physical makeup, many
such persons being nervous or
high strung.
For years, the treatment of ul
cers has consisted of the giving
of milk and cream, with alkaline
substances, such as baking soda.
Amino Acids
More recently, however, ulcers
have been treated with amino
acids, these being the substances
which make up proteins and found
in such foods as meat, milk and
eggs.
Recently a study was made of
23 patients with these ulcers. For
the first ten days they were given
a diet made up exclusively of
milk, plus the amino acids which
were adminiMered every two
hours in the does prescribed bv
the doctor. During the next 20
days, the patients were given a
more ample diet, were fed every
hours, and received five te.s
spoonfuls of the amino acids each
day. After this time, the patients
were allowed 1o eat any foods
they deired, with the exception
of highly-seasoned foods, spices,
and rough or bulky foods.
During the period of treatment,
the patients continued with their
work, but were told to rest as
much as possible.
In 19 of the 23 patients studied,
the symptoms were completely re
lieved. There was a slight im
pravement in one case, with no
benelit in three others. In those
patients who were benefitted, the
symptoms, as a tule, disappeared
within 24 houis.
Treatment Helpful
Treatment with amino acids is
helpful in cases of peptic ulcer,
but these acids do not seem to
keep the ulcers from recurring.
There is no evidence indicating
that there is a deficiency of pro
tein in the bodies of patients with
peptic ulcer. Nevertheless .the
amino acids seem to be of help.
The results obtained with the
treatment stated above are about
I like those secured with other
form.- of milk diets. However, th
treatment above mentioned has
the advantage of allowing the pa
tient to continue at wprk; durinf '
the ti eat mint. ( ;
This foim of treatment may bt
especially helpful before ; opera
tion, since it tends to improve tht)
patient's general condition.

be on television. You're scared, to
death. You'd be petrified in front
of that camera. But it would bo
an experience. Something to tell
the grandkiddies some day. Be
sides, maybe this is fate's finger
tapping your shoulder. Maybe an
important sideline awaits you 'in
television. Perhaps I (you ham,
you) you are tele-visual. ;
So with becoming reluctance,
you say yes. You tell all youf
friends. You have three days I is
