Careers Underway
An essay contest on "Nursing as
a Career" is now 'under way
among 11th and 12th grade stu
dents of Marion and Polk counties,
sponsored by the nurse recruit
ment committe of the American
Red Cross and the district nurses'
association.
District prizes are $15 and $10.
In the state contest, prizes are $100
for first place; $50 for second; $25
each for third and fourth places.
Mrs. Bernice Yeary "of the coun
ty health office is chairman for
both the nurse recruitment com
mittee and the nurses' group for
the contest.

Fleet at Astoria
ASTORIA, April 18 -iff)- The
quick action by the Astoria fire
department saved the drag boat
fishing fleet here yesterday after
fire and explosion destroyed one
42-foot trolling vessel.

blazing gasoline that was shower
ed over the boat basin from ex
plosions aboard the boat Pasolento
from Port Angeles, Wash.

FARMERS INSURANCE GROUP
Permits for one new house and
several -repairs and alternations
were issued Monday by the city
building inspector's office.
Alfred K la use was authorized
to construct the house at 2295
Claude st. for $5,200. Salem Mem
orial hospital, 665 S. Winter U
was issued a permit for alterations
to cost $2,500.
Other permits went to A. D.
Wagner, 2625 S. Summer st, alter
workshop, $25; Joe F. Larsen, 640
E. Rural ave., house repairs, $500;
Otto Herrling, 2345 Rex St., wreck
shed, $50; and Dycie Weaver,
2276 Hyde at., re roof house, $50.
ALBANY, April 18 A Cala
pooya Boy Scout district court of
honor will be held Wednesday
night at the American Legion hall
here, beginning at 8 o'clock.
An Eagle scout award, highest
badge in scouting, will be given to
Stanley Malo, scoutmaster of Al
bany troop 100. Scouts' from troops
in Albany, Lebanon and other
communities are expected to re
ceive merit badges and advance
ment awards.
The court will consist of former
Eagle i scouts from this area. It
will be presided over by Merle

Stolen Here in
Two Burglaries
Burglars escaped with $334 in
currency from the Dutch Mill tav
ern, 897 N. Commercial it., some
time early Monday, city police de
tective reported.
The money, in two money bags,
was taken from a booth hiding
place at the tavern. Owner Fred
hay told police. Entrance was ap
parently gained by slipping the
lock on the front door.
Second theft of dynamite from
the city tool house at 3000 N. River
rd. in less than a month was re
ported also Monday.
Two dozen sticks were taken
from a tool box in the building.
The thief pried open a shutter to
gain entrance. The place was ran
sacked, but the dynamite was the
only loss reported. Several sticks
were stolen from the tool house

Cedar Butte Trip
Slated on Sunday
Salem Chemeketans, an outdoor
club, will entertain the Trails club
of Portland at an outing Sunday
to Cedar butte in the center of the
famous Tillamook burn in the
Coast range.
The groups will drive 80 miles
to the butte and then hike in the
vicinity. Chemeketan members
and other local persons planning
to go are to sign the register at
148 N. Commercial st.
