scoring column, but McNulty,
through no fault of his own, was
tagged with the final run and the
loss with one., out in the ninth
inning.
The winning run came when
Johnny Kovenz walked with the
one out. He. stole second, and on
Manager Beard's throw to catch
him, the ball bounded Into the
outfield. Kovenz wound up on
third, from where he tallied on
Hal Zurcher's squeeze bunt.
Oregon's first two runs came
on a walk tj Zurther, a triple by
Al Cohen over Mel Wasley's head
in left field,-; and an infield out.
They scored again in the second on
a single by Walt Kirsch, a double
by Mel Krause and another single
by Zurcher. i
Salem dented the rubber twice
in the third when with two outs
Wayne Peterson walked and
scored on Bob Cherry's terrific
drive to deep center for a triple.
Cherry rambled in when Krause
was called for a balk.
The only other Salem run, in
the fourth, came on a two-base
error on Al Spaeter's bouncer and
Jim Wert's single to center. Wert
incidentally had two of the five
Senator hits.
McNulty, although the losing
pitcher, was perhaps the best of
the three Salem flingers in the oft
well played game. He had a good
curve working, as did DeWltt. The
latter was too wild with his, how
ever. Some sharp fielding plays
were turned in by both sides, and
particularly by Bud Peterson, Sa
lem shortpateher.
