Three zreignt-riding escapees
from Fairviewi home were back

spending the night commuting

City firemen stood by Thurs
day at the Paul us cannery to be
sure that flames from a pile of
discarded boxes didn t spread to
the nearby veterans' colony. The
fruit boxes were being destroyed
by the company.

R. E. Nordyke reported to city
police Thursday that two rolls of
copper wire were stolen from the
Salem Electric warehouse some

McKay Decides
Against Action on
Clemency Pleas
Gov. Douglas McKay does not
Intend to take any .action in the
case of William NageL Portland
minister, who is under peniten
tiary sentence for; contributing to
the-delinquency! of a minor girl
in Klamath county, his office an
nounced Thursday.
Hundreds of letters have been
received by Governor McKay
during the past few weeks urging
clemency.
The state supreme court, in a
recent decision, upheld Nagel's
conviction in the Klamath county
circuit court. i
Committee Seeks
To Get Tank for
Army DaylDisplay
At a progress meeting of the Sa
lem Army day steering committee
held Thursday night at the cham
ber of commerce, it was announc
ed that efforts were being made to
obtain a late model army tank for
exhibition purposes on Saturday,
April 9, at part of theo utdoor dis
play of military equipment to be
located on the courthouse lawn.

house at the armory in the evening
were set at 7:30 to 10 pjxl, with
another display of equipment and
a continuous showing of latest
army training and combat films.
The steering committee is sched
uled to meet again next Thursday
to develop final plans for Salem'
