RIVERSIDE. CaliL, March S
(Special)- Since a fellow cant
tell how a cake will come out of
the oven by reading the direc
tions on the box of cake mix. its
strictly a guessing game on how
the Beavers will line up when
they move Into San Francisco
March SO for their 1949 PCL open
er against the Seals.
But, by dint of watching what
has happened here In early train
ing drills, a starting lineup with
1941 'batting and pitching aver
ages listed could be like this:
Johnny Rucker (.311) cf. Ed
die Basinski (.277) 2b. Joe Brovia
(.327) rf. Harvey Storey (.105)
3b. Dick Wenner (.271) If. Jimmy
Wert (.285) lb. Jim Gladd (J4)
c. Frankie Zak (.248) ss. Tommy
Bridges (15-11) or Roy Helser
(12-11) P.
In case Manager Bill Sweeney
does produce such a lineup it will
contain onlv three players new
to Beaver livery. Wert, a spring
training camp sensation, toiled
for Salem last season and was
tabbed a question mark at the
plate. In drills here, however, he
has hit hard, often and for dis
tance. Brovia patrolled an out
field post for the Seals in 194
and was the second best hitter
on the club. Gladd was regular
catcher for Hollywood a year ago.
He hits a long ball, albeit a bit
inconsistently, has a good throw
ing arm and can stand a lot of
rugged work.
